The stakes

The FSOT is the first step

Every Foreign Service Officer candidate starts with the FSOT. The score report right after the test shows pass or fail, and the State Department invites candidates to the next stage as hiring needs require. Here is how the path works:

1

You register with Pearson VUE

In the registration period before a testing window. One test in any 12-month period.

2

You take the FSOT

Three multiple-choice sections at home or at a test center: Job Knowledge, English Usage and Comprehension, and Logical Reasoning.

3

You take the FSOA

If selected: the Written Exercise, then the Structured Interview and Negotiation Exercise.

4

Clearances and the register

Background, medical and suitability clearances, then a ranked register by career track, with offers by hiring need.

No calculator and no breaks. That's why you practice before test day.

1

Job Knowledge

U.S. government, history and society; world history and geography; economics; and math and statistics, as the State Department's practice-test page described it in October 2026. No calculator. The State Department's practice test has 50 questions in 35 minutes.

2

English Usage and Comprehension

Grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence and paragraph revision and reading comprehension, on text like the documents officers proofread. The practice test has 45 questions in 35 minutes.

3

Logical Reasoning

Short hypothetical work scenarios where you pick the best response: inferences, conclusions, logical flaws and assumptions. No Foreign Service knowledge needed. The practice test has 30 questions in 45 minutes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do I get for free?

Free study guides that explain what is on the new FSOT, the 2026-2027 test dates and registration, scoring and the steps after the test, and how to become a Foreign Service Officer, all written from State Department and Pearson VUE sources. Our practice tests for all three sections are coming soon. The State Department also offers its own online practice test.

How many questions are on the FSOT?

The State Department's online practice test has 125 questions: 50 Job Knowledge, 45 English Usage and Comprehension and 30 Logical Reasoning. Separate counts for the live test are not published.

How long is the FSOT?

The practice test gives 35, 35 and 45 minutes, 115 minutes in all, and Department of State tests have no breaks. Pearson VUE says to confirm your appointment length in your email confirmation.

What is the FSOT passing score?

No current State Department page gives one. As captured on October 7, 2026, its practice-test page said the FSOT no longer has a passing score and that candidates move on by the highest scores and the needs of the Foreign Service; that page has since been removed. The score report right after the test shows whether you passed or failed.

Is there still an essay on the FSOT?

The State Department's practice-test page said, as of October 7, 2026, that there is no longer a written essay, and its September 2025 media note says situational judgment was removed. A Written Exercise comes later, for candidates invited to the Foreign Service Officer Assessment.

How much does the FSOT cost?

The fee is not published. Pearson VUE's pages mention an exam fee that a no-show forfeits, but neither Pearson VUE nor the State Department states an amount on its FSOT pages.

Can I take the FSOT at home?

Yes. You can test at home with Pearson VUE's OnVUE online proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test center in the United States or overseas. The test is closed book, with no calculator; online you get a digital whiteboard.

When is the next FSOT?

See our FSOT test dates guide, which lists every window Pearson VUE has posted, with registration dates.

How often can I take the FSOT?

Once in any 12-month period, per Pearson VUE.

Who can take the FSOT?

U.S. citizens who are at least 20 and no older than 59 on the day they register and who are open to assignments based on the needs of the service. No degree or foreign language requirement is stated.

What happens if I am not satisfied?

Every purchase comes with an unconditional 7-day money-back refund. No conditions, no forms.
