The stakes

Your score sets your list number

Everyone who passes is ranked by score, and candidates are considered for hiring in list order. Screening steps come later, but your score decides when you are called. Here is how hiring works:

1

You apply on OASys

File online during the filing period. Exam 7331 had a $0 fee; check each new notice.

2

You take the test

A multiple-choice test on a computer at a DCAS testing center.

3

Your score sets your list number

Pass with 70% or more and you join the eligible list in score order.

4

Calls go in list order

The NYC Police Department screens candidates in list order: investigation, medical, psychological and drug screening.

A higher score means an earlier call. That's why you practice before test day.

Deductive ReasoningBasic

Agent Rowena Achebe is walking her post on a busy shopping block of Calloway Avenue. Made-up rule for the Brightwater District: No vehicle other than a bus may stand in a marked bus stop at any time. The one exception is a vehicle picking up or dropping off a passenger who uses a wheelchair, and only while that passenger is getting in or out. A driver who stays behind the wheel is still standing.

Which vehicle should she give a summons?

Deductive ReasoningBasic

Agent Desmond Kowalczyk checks the meters on a block of Pruitt Street lined with small shops. Made-up meter rule for the Brightwater District: From 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday, a vehicle at a meter must show a paid receipt on its dashboard, and no vehicle may stay longer than 2 hours. A vehicle with a disabled-parking permit hanging from its mirror does not need a receipt, but the 2-hour limit still applies.

At 3:00 PM on a Saturday, which vehicle should get a summons?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do I get for free?

You get free study guides that explain the Traffic Enforcement Agent exam, the requirements, the seven abilities and your list number, all written from official NYC sources, plus 30 free practice questions with answers explained. You also get one free 14-question practice test that mixes every ability, with your score, an ability-by-ability breakdown and every answer explained. Full access adds unlimited 35-question practice sets, tests on one ability at a time, targeted drills on your weakest abilities and a readiness score.

How many questions are on the real exam, and how long is it?

That is not published. The official notice lists the abilities the test may cover, but it gives no question count, no time limit and no weight for each ability. Our practice sets are 35 questions, our own length, with questions spread evenly across the abilities. That spread is our choice, not the City's weighting.

When can I apply, and what does it cost?

Filing for Exam 7331 ran from July 1, 2026, to August 25, 2026, with a $0 fee, and testing was expected to begin on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The DCAS exam schedule plans the next Traffic Enforcement Agent exam, 7332, with filing from November 5 to November 25, 2026, then 7333 and 7334 in 2027. Each exam gets its own notice, and the fee can change: the earlier Exam 6331 cost $54. Check the 7332 notice when it posts.

Is the NYPD traffic agent exam the same as the Traffic Enforcement Agent exam?

Yes. Traffic Enforcement Agents do their pre-employment screening with the NYC Police Department and work for it, which is why many people search for the NYPD traffic agent exam. The official title on the DCAS notice is Traffic Enforcement Agent, and the current notice is Exam 7331, with Exam 7332 planned next. PrepRaven is independent and not affiliated with the City of New York or any City agency.

What score do I need to pass?

You need at least 70% to pass. Passing places you on the eligible list in score order with a list number. Eligible veterans can get 5 extra points (10 for disabled veterans), added only to a passing score and only if claimed before the list is established.

Why does my score matter if I only need 70%?

Because the list is ranked by score, and the list sets the order in which candidates are considered for hiring. A higher score means a lower list number and an earlier call. No official source says what score is high enough to be hired, so the goal is simply the best score you can get.

What happens on test day?

Your Admission Notice appears on your OASys Dashboard 14 days before testing is expected to begin, and you can print it or show it on your phone. Bring one valid ID with your photo and signature, with a name that matches your application. Phones, smartwatches and other devices are sealed in a pouch until the exam event is over. A basic four-function calculator is allowed.

What happens after I pass?

The NYC Police Department does the pre-employment screening for this title. The notice lists an investigation with a $75 fingerprint fee, medical and psychological assessments and a drug screening. New agents serve a 12-month probation and must complete a training course during it.

Who can take the exam?

By the date of appointment, you need a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent. You must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in New York State by the time you reach 15 months in the job, and you must be able to understand and be understood in English. The notice states no minimum or maximum age.

Are these real exam questions?

No. DCAS publishes no sample questions for this exam. All our questions are original practice content written from the official ability definitions. Memory questions hide the study material before you answer, and map questions use drawn street maps with one-way streets.

What happens if I am not satisfied?

Every purchase comes with an unconditional 7-day money-back refund. No conditions, no forms.
