Deductive Reasoning

Apply a set of general rules, such as parking and standing rules, to a specific case and pick the logical answer.

Question 1 (easy)

Made-up rule for the Elmridge District: No vehicle may park within 12 feet of a fire hydrant at any time. This applies even when the driver stays in the vehicle. The only exception is a vehicle that stops just long enough for a passenger to get in or out.

Agent Keisha Morgan checks four vehicles near hydrants on her post.

Which vehicle is in violation?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The pickup truck is parked 9 feet from the hydrant, inside the 12-foot limit, and the rule applies even when the driver stays in the vehicle. The van and the taxi are more than 12 feet away, which the rule allows whether or not a driver is inside. The sedan is stopping only for a passenger to get out, which is the one exception.

Question 2 (medium)

Made-up rule for Fenwick Avenue: From 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday, the curb between Dorsey Street and Cole Street is a commercial loading zone. During those hours, only a vehicle with commercial plates may stand there, only while it is being loaded or unloaded, and for no more than 3 hours.

At 6:30 PM on a Saturday, Agent Daniel Reyes checks the zone.

Which vehicle may stay where it is?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The van has commercial plates, is being unloaded and has been there 2 hours and 50 minutes, under the 3-hour limit. The truck unloading lumber has been there 3 hours and 20 minutes, which is over the limit. The car is being unloaded but has passenger plates, and the truck whose driver is eating is not being loaded or unloaded.

Question 3 (medium)

Made-up street cleaning rule for Arden Street: No parking on the north side from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM on Mondays and Thursdays. No parking on the south side from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays.

On a Thursday, Agent Priya Nair walks Arden Street several times.

Which parked car should get a summons?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. On Thursday, the north side is closed for cleaning from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM, and 9:45 AM falls inside that window. The car at 8:20 AM was there before the window began, and the car at 10:05 AM was there after it ended. The south-side rule applies only on Tuesdays and Fridays, which means the car on the south side is legal on a Thursday.

Question 4 (hard)

Made-up rule for the Elmridge District: A vehicle double-parked on a two-lane street gets a summons. Exception: a vehicle with commercial plates may double-park for up to 20 minutes while making a delivery, but only if no legal curb space is open on the same block and the vehicle does not block a bus stop, crosswalk or driveway.

Agent Lena Park finds a truck with commercial plates double-parked on a two-lane street. The driver has been delivering to a restaurant for 15 minutes. A legal curb space is open at the far end of the same block, and the truck is not blocking a bus stop, crosswalk or driveway.

What should Agent Park do?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The exception applies only when every condition is met, and one is not: a legal curb space is open on the same block. The commercial plates, the 15 minutes and the clear bus stop, crosswalk and driveway each meet one condition, but meeting some of the conditions is not enough. A summons is right, but not for the reason in the last option, because the rule does allow some commercial vehicles to double-park.

Information Ordering

Follow a given rule or set of steps in the correct order, such as the steps for issuing a summons.

Question 5 (easy)

Made-up procedure for an electronic summons:

  1. (1)Check the posted sign and the time.
  2. (2)Record the plate number and state.
  3. (3)Photograph the vehicle and the sign.
  4. (4)Enter the violation code and print the summons.
  5. (5)Place the summons under the windshield wiper.

Agent Marcus Bell has checked the sign and the time and has recorded the plate number and state.

What should he do next?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. Agent Bell has finished steps 1 and 2, which makes step 3, photographing the vehicle and the sign, the next step. Entering the code is step 4 and placing the summons is step 5, and both come after the photos. The procedure does not call for checking the sign a second time.

Question 6 (medium)

Made-up procedure for a dark traffic signal: Report the outage to the radio dispatcher before you do anything else. Put on your reflective vest before you step into the street. Set out your cones before you take your position in the intersection. Agent Sofia Mendes arrives at a corner where the signal is dark. Which order of steps follows the procedure?

P. Set out cones
Q. Report the outage to the dispatcher
R. Take position in the intersection
S. Put on the reflective vest

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The report to the dispatcher (Q) must come first. The vest (S) goes on before she steps into the street, which she must do to set out cones (P), and the cones go out before she takes her position (R): Q, S, P, R. S, Q, P, R puts on the vest before the report, Q, P, S, R sets out cones in the street before the vest is on, and Q, S, R, P takes position before the cones are out.

Question 7 (medium)

Agent Nia Robinson is writing a report. She wants her sentences in the order the events happened.

1. I wrote Summons 448-201 for standing in a bus stop and placed it on the windshield.

2. At 10:12 AM, I saw a gray sedan, plate GXT-3391, stopped in the bus stop at Corwin Street and Hale Avenue.

3. At 10:20 AM, the driver returned, read the summons and drove away.

4. I checked the bus stop sign, which allows no standing at any time, and photographed the car and the sign.

Which order is best?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. She first saw the car (2), then checked the sign and took photos (4), then wrote the summons (1), and the driver read it when he returned (3). 2, 1, 4, 3 writes the summons before she checks the sign. 4, 2, 1, 3 checks the sign before she has seen the car, and 2, 4, 3, 1 has the driver read a summons that has not been written yet.

Question 8 (hard)

Made-up filing rule: Summonses are filed in order of violation code, with the lowest code first. Summonses with the same code are filed by the time they were issued, with the earliest first. Agent Tomas Varga has these five summonses to file:

Code 21, 2:15 PM, plate KTR-4410

Code 14, 3:40 PM, plate HBN-2207

Code 21, 9:05 AM, plate JLM-8812

Code 14, 11:30 AM, plate DVC-5530

Code 37, 8:50 AM, plate PRT-1194

Which summons is filed third?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. Code 14 comes first: DVC-5530 (11:30 AM), then HBN-2207 (3:40 PM). Code 21 comes next, and its earlier summons, JLM-8812 at 9:05 AM, is third. KTR-4410 is the later Code 21 summons and is fourth. DVC-5530 would be third only if the summonses were filed by time alone.

Memorization

Remember words, numbers, pictures or procedures after studying them, such as the details of an incident.

Show the notice: Field notes, Post 12, Wednesday day tour (study it for 75 seconds, then close it)

Field notes, Agent Tanya Brooks, Post 12, Wednesday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

8:40 AM: A blue box truck, plate NRV-6627, was double-parked outside 318 Fenwick Avenue. The driver, Leon Petrovic, said he was waiting for a loading dock to open. Summons issued.

10:15 AM: A city bus and a white taxi scraped side mirrors at Corwin Street and Hale Avenue. No one was hurt. The bus driver gave his badge number, 5172.

1:30 PM: The parking meter in front of 402 Fenwick Avenue showed an error screen. Reported to the meter unit by radio.

Question 9 (easy)

Based on the field notes you just studied, in front of which address was the parking meter showing an error screen?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The notes say the meter in front of 402 Fenwick Avenue showed an error screen at 1:30 PM. 318 Fenwick Avenue is where the box truck was double-parked. Hale Avenue and Corwin Street are the streets where the bus and the taxi scraped mirrors.

Question 10 (easy)

Based on the field notes you just studied, at what time did the bus and the taxi scrape mirrors?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The notes put the mirror incident at 10:15 AM. The double-parked truck was at 8:40 AM, the meter report was at 1:30 PM, and 7:00 AM is when Agent Brooks's tour began.

Question 11 (hard)

Based on the field notes you just studied, which statement about the double-parked truck is correct?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The truck was a blue box truck, and driver Leon Petrovic said he was waiting for a loading dock to open. White was the color of the taxi. The driver said nothing about a delivery to 402 Fenwick Avenue, which is the address of the broken meter, and 5172 was the bus driver's badge number; the plate was NRV-6627.

Show the notice: Street fair briefing, Saturday (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)

Street fair, Saturday. Linden Avenue is closed to traffic from Ash Street to Birch Street, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Agent Felipe Navarro staffs the barrier at Ash Street. Agent Grace Yoon staffs the barrier at Birch Street.

Detour: northbound Linden Avenue traffic turns right onto Ash Street, then left onto Maple Avenue.

Vendor trucks may enter only at Birch Street, and only before 9:00 AM. The tow truck waits on Cedar Street.

Question 12 (medium)

Based on the briefing you just studied, where does northbound Linden Avenue traffic go for the detour?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The detour sends northbound traffic right onto Ash Street and then left onto Maple Avenue. The first option reverses the two turns. Birch Street is where the vendor trucks enter, and Cedar Street is where the tow truck waits.

Question 13 (hard)

Based on the briefing you just studied, which agent staffs the barrier where vendor trucks may enter, and until what time may they enter?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. Vendor trucks may enter only at Birch Street, where Agent Grace Yoon staffs the barrier, and only before 9:00 AM. Agent Felipe Navarro is at Ash Street. 10:00 AM is when the street closes to traffic, not the vendor deadline.

Problem Sensitivity

Notice when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, such as a hazard in traffic.

Question 14 (easy)

Agent Andre Wallace is walking his post at 4:45 PM on a weekday. Which of these is most likely to cause an accident if nothing is done?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. An open manhole in a travel lane with no cones or workers is a hazard that drivers may not see until it is too late, and it needs action right away. A cart set up away from the corner, a van in a marked loading zone and a line of cars at a red light are normal street conditions.

Question 15 (medium)

A utility crew has closed the right lane of Hale Avenue in the middle of a block. Agent Carmen Ortiz is assigned to keep traffic moving past the work.

Which detail signals a problem that is likely to cause a crash?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. Drivers coming around the curve will meet the closed lane with almost no warning, which can lead to sudden stops, swerves and rear-end crashes. A flagger in a vest and an advance warning sign show that the work zone is set up safely. Slow traffic past a lane closure is expected and is not a danger by itself.

Question 16 (medium)

At 3:00 PM on a school day, Agent Kevin Tran is assigned to the corner of Ash Street and Linden Avenue, outside an elementary school. Dismissal begins at 3:05 PM. He notices four things.

Which one is most likely to lead to someone getting hurt in the next few minutes?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. In five minutes, children will start crossing at this corner, and the person who normally helps them cross is missing, which needs attention right away. A meter with time left and a cracked taillight on a legally parked car are not dangers right now. A truck unloading in a marked zone down the block is following the rules.

Question 17 (hard)

Before the end of her tour, Agent Hannah Cole reviews four summonses she wrote on one block of Corwin Street. The only sign on that block reads NO PARKING 8 AM to 6 PM, MONDAY to FRIDAY.

Which summons shows a mistake?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The sign applies only Monday through Friday, which means a No Parking summons written on a Saturday was written when the rule was not in effect. Wednesday at 10:40 AM, Friday at 5:55 PM and Monday at 8:05 AM all fall within 8 AM to 6 PM on a weekday, even though two of them are close to the start or the end of the hours.

Spatial Orientation

Work out where you are in relation to a place or object, or where it is in relation to you, such as on a street map.

🗺Reading the street maps. On these maps, each gray square is one street square, and an arrow marks a one-way street. North is at the top.

Question 18 (easy)

Use the map. The gray squares are streets. Agent Rosa Ibarra is at the Grocery Store and is sent to the Public Library to check a report of a blocked hydrant.

In which direction is the Public Library from the Grocery Store?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. North is at the top of the map. The Public Library is in the top row at the far left, and the Grocery Store is in the bottom row toward the right, which puts the Library up and to the left: northwest. It is not straight north, because it is also well to the west, and northeast and southwest point the wrong way.

Question 19 (medium)

Use the map. The gray squares are streets, and the arrows show one-way streets. Agent Jamal Price drives a patrol car from the Bus Depot to the Public Library. Driving only on gray squares and obeying the one-way arrows, how many street squares does he drive on along the shortest route? Count every street square on the route, including the first one next to the Bus Depot and the last one next to the Public Library.

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The top street runs east only, which means he cannot drive west on it toward the Library. The shortest legal route goes 4 squares south on the one-way street beside the Bus Depot, 2 squares west on the two-way street below the Diner and 3 squares north on the street beside the High School and the Library: 9 squares. The answer 5 is the route west along the top street, against the arrows.

Question 20 (hard)

Use the map. The gray squares are streets, and the arrows show one-way streets. Agent Wei Chen is parked at the Post Office when he is told to go to the nearest of four locations.

Driving only on gray squares and obeying the one-way arrows, which location can he reach by driving on the fewest street squares?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. From the Post Office he cannot drive west on the top street, which runs east only, and he must first go south. That takes 5 squares to the Grocery Store, 7 to the Diner, 9 to the High School and 11 to the Bank. The Bank looks closest on the map, but it is the farthest to drive, because he has to go around the one-way streets.

Question 21 (easy)

Use the map. Agent Luis Romero is directing traffic outside the Hotel when a driver asks him how to get to the Pizzeria. In which direction is the Pizzeria from the Hotel?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. North is at the top of the map. The Pizzeria is in the bottom row at the far left, and the Hotel is two rows higher at the far right, which puts the Pizzeria down and to the left: southwest. It is not due west, because it is also lower on the map, and southeast and northwest point the wrong way.

Question 22 (hard)

Use the map. The gray squares are streets, and the arrows show one-way streets. Agent Olivia Grant is at the Laundry in a patrol car and must check four locations, starting with the one she can reach first.

Driving only on gray squares and obeying the one-way arrows, which location can she reach by driving on the fewest street squares?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The street beside the Laundry runs south only, and she cannot drive north on it. She drives west on the street above the bottom row and turns north on the one-way street on the left side of the map: 7 squares to the Day Care, 9 to the Arena, 11 to the Car Wash and 13 to the Museum. The Museum looks closest on the map, but the middle street runs east only, which forces the long way around.

Written Comprehension

Understand written sentences and paragraphs, such as a traffic sign or a memo.

Question 23 (easy)

Read the made-up memo, then answer the question.

Heat advisory memo: While the heat advisory is in effect, agents on foot posts will get a 15-minute water break every 2 hours. Before and after each break, the agent must tell the radio dispatcher. Agents assigned to school posts may not take a break during school arrival or dismissal. Agents who feel dizzy or sick must stop work and call the dispatcher right away.

According to the memo, what must an agent on a foot post do before taking a water break?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The memo says the agent must tell the radio dispatcher before and after each break. It does not require a supervisor's permission or another agent to cover the post. The rule about arrival and dismissal applies only to agents on school posts.

Question 24 (medium)

Read the made-up sign guide, then answer the question.

Elmridge District sign guide: A No Parking sign lets a driver stop to load or unload goods or passengers, but the driver must stay with the vehicle or close by. A No Standing sign lets a driver stop only to drop off or pick up passengers quickly; loading or unloading goods is not allowed. A No Stopping sign means a driver may not stop at all, except to obey a traffic signal or an agent's direction. The hours on a sign apply only on the days shown. If a sign shows no days, it applies every day.

A sign on Birch Street reads NO STANDING 7 AM to 10 AM. Agent Ethan Wright checks the block on a Sunday.

Which driver is in violation?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The sign shows no days, which means it applies on Sunday too, and No Standing does not allow unloading goods. Unloading juice at 8:30 AM is a violation. Letting a passenger out quickly is allowed under No Standing, and the drivers at 6:50 AM and 10:40 AM are outside the sign's hours.

Question 25 (hard)

Read the made-up memo, then answer the question.

Memo to all agents: Effective Monday, an agent who finds a meter that is broken or missing must report it by radio and enter it in the handheld under Meter Defect before the end of the tour. A vehicle at a broken meter may stay for the posted time limit without paying; after that, the agent may issue a summons for overtime parking. If the meter is missing, the agent must not issue any summons at that space until the meter is replaced and must place a yellow Meter Out tag on the pole.

Agent Fatima Malik finds a pole with no meter on it. A car has been parked at that space for 4 hours, and the posted limit is 2 hours.

What should she do?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. A missing meter must be reported and entered just like a broken one, and the memo adds two rules for a missing meter: no summons at that space and a yellow Meter Out tag on the pole. The overtime summons applies only at a broken meter, not a missing one. Leaving the pole without a tag skips one of the required steps.

Question 26 (hard)

Read the made-up guide, then answer the question.

Testifying at a hearing: When a driver contests a summons, the agent who wrote it may be called to testify. Bring the printed summons record and any photos. Testify only about what you saw or heard yourself. You may repeat what another person said only if you heard that person say it. If your notes and your memory do not agree, say so instead of guessing.

Agent Brian O'Neill is testifying about a summons he wrote.

Which statement does the guide allow him to make?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. He heard the driver say it himself, and the guide lets him repeat it. The store owner spoke to his partner, not to him. Saying it was probably closer to an hour is a guess against his own notes, which the guide says to avoid, and what usually happens on the block is not something he saw in this case.

Written Expression

Use English words and sentences so that others understand what you wrote, such as in a report.

Question 27 (easy)

Agent Monica Perez is writing a report. Which sentence is the clearest and most complete?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The first sentence gives the time, the summons number, the vehicle, its plate and the place in one clear sentence. The second does not say what "it" is and leaves out the summons number and the plate. The third joins two sentences with only a comma, and the fourth gives no exact time and leaves out the plate.

Question 28 (medium)

Agent Kwame Asante saw a taxi move into the left lane, where its side mirror struck the side mirror of a city bus. Which sentence reports this most clearly and accurately?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The third sentence says what struck what and when, with no guessing about blame. Calling the driver careless is an opinion, and "hit the bus" is less exact than mirror against mirror. In the second sentence, "it" could mean the taxi or the bus, and the last sentence joins two sentences with only a comma.

Question 29 (medium)

Agent Samuel Okoro is writing a report about three vans. Which sentence is written correctly?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. "Each" is singular and takes "was," as in the last sentence. The first sentence uses "were" with "each," the second puts an apostrophe in a plain plural ("van's"), and the third joins two sentences with only a comma.

Question 30 (hard)

Agent Diana Flores wrote these notes: Monday, 7:45 AM. White van, plate TRN-3304, parked in the bus lane on Maple Avenue at Cedar Street. Driver Victor Hale said he was waiting for a coworker. Summons 610-447 issued.

Which sentence reports her notes most accurately?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The second sentence matches every detail in the notes. The first puts the van on Cedar Street at Maple Avenue instead of on Maple Avenue at Cedar Street, the third reverses two letters of the plate (TNR instead of TRN), and the last changes what the driver said.
