FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do I get for free?

Free guides written from TLC and PSI sources: how to get a TLC license in NYC, a TLC exam study guide with the current fares, a geography study guide and a PSI booking and test day guide. Our practice tests for all 10 topics are coming soon. The TLC's own study guide and practice exams are free on the TLC website.

How many questions are on the TLC exam, and what score do I need?

80 multiple-choice questions in up to 2 hours. You need 70%, which is 56 correct. How many questions come from each topic is not published.

How much does the TLC exam cost?

$49 per attempt, paid to PSI by credit card when you book. It is not refundable. The full list of licensing costs is in our guide to getting a TLC license.

How many times can I take the TLC exam?

See the retake line in the key facts above, which is dated. A proposed TLC rule would limit attempts, and our appointment guide tracks it.

Is the TLC exam in other languages?

Yes. You choose English, Arabic, Bengali, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Spanish or Urdu when you book. Our guides and practice are in English only.

Do I need a TLC license to drive for Uber in NYC?

TLC's licensing flyer says one TLC Driver License covers yellow taxis, green taxis, livery, black car, limousine and High Volume For-Hire Vehicles, the TLC's category for large app-based ride services, so the exam is part of the process. Each app company sets its own extra requirements.

Is the TLC study guide from 2019 still good to use?

For the topic list and the rule sections, yes; they still match the current rules. Its fares are out of date, and its geography pages have a few errors. Our study guide lists what changed.

Is the geography part open book?

Partly. PSI hands you a five-borough street atlas and a Manhattan Address Key in the exam room. Our geography practice is text only and does not include atlas lookups or map and photo questions.

What happens if I am not satisfied?

Every purchase comes with an unconditional 7-day money-back refund. No conditions, no forms.
