Checked on October 23, 2026, against the PSI candidate information bulletin for the TLC Driver License Exam, the TLC Licensing Education page, the TLC PSI testing center list (October 2024) and the TLC proposed rules page.
This guide covers the TLC exam appointment from start to finish: how PSI sends you the booking link, the $49 fee and the cancel rules, the test centers, what to bring, what happens in the room, how results arrive and how retakes work. PSI Services LLC gives the exam for the TLC. The TLC does not book the exam for you.
How to book a PSI TLC exam appointment
- Apply for the TLC Driver License first. The steps are in our guide to getting a TLC license in NYC.
- Wait for PSI's email. PSI sends a registration link to the email address on your TLC application. Check your spam folder.
- Book on the PSI site. Choose a test center, a date and the exam language: English, Arabic, Bengali, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Spanish or Urdu.
- Pay the $49 fee by credit card. It is not refundable or transferable.
When to book: the TLC says to take the exam after the 3-day course, and its 5 Things You Should Know sheet says to finish both the course and the WAV training first. You must pass no later than 3 days before your 90-day application expires.
PSI contact (from the bulletin): (833) 892-5440 or examschedule@psionline.com.
Canceling, rescheduling and losing the fee
You can cancel or reschedule for free up to 2 days before your appointment; PSI says a refund arrives within 4 business days. You lose the $49 if you:
- do not show up;
- arrive after the exam start time;
- do not have proper ID;
- cancel less than 2 days ahead.
PSI TLC exam locations
The TLC education page lists these test centers, as of October 23, 2026:
| Borough | Test center |
|---|---|
| Bronx | PSI, 34 Marconi Street |
| Bronx | New View Testing Centers, 3250 Westchester Avenue #126 |
| Brooklyn | PSI, 527 Coney Island Avenue |
| Manhattan | Brainseed Times Square, 566 7th Avenue, Suite 703 |
| Queens | Brainseed, 102-50 67th Drive, Forest Hills |
| Staten Island | Brainseed, 1911 Richmond Avenue, Suite 130 |
The TLC's separate PSI center list from October 2024 is different: it has no New View site and adds Alliance Computing Solutions in Manhattan (545 8th Avenue #1210) and a site in Flushing (36-60 Main Street). Confirm the address in PSI's booking screen and your confirmation before you travel. An older TLC page says the exam is taken at your course school; that is no longer how it works.
Test day: ID, check-in and what to leave at home
- Arrive 15 minutes early. Arriving after the start time costs you the fee.
- ID: a state-issued driver's license with your photo, not expired, with a name that matches your PSI and TLC records.
- Bring the TLC Sign-in Registration Form.
- Check-in: PSI takes your photo and signature. Staff check pockets, sleeves and eyeglass frames.
- Not allowed: phones, watches, bags, outerwear, hats other than religious headwear, your own pens and food. A prohibited item in the testing room can invalidate your result.
- Given to you: a Geographia NYC Five Borough Street Atlas, a Manhattan Address Key, a blank sheet of paper and a pencil or pen. They are collected at the end. No calculator. How to use the atlas is in our TLC geography test guide.
- Timing: you have 2 hours for 80 questions, with no breaks. You may leave for the restroom only with permission, and you get no extra time.
Practice the screen first: the TLC and PSI offer a free tutorial video of the computer exam in all seven exam languages, linked from the TLC education page.
Accommodations: a screen reader is available on request, with no documents needed. Other ADA accommodations need documentation, and you should book only after PSI confirms them.
TLC exam results
You see pass or fail on the screen right after you submit. PSI emails your results within 48 hours. If you fail, the report names the topic areas to study, "such as geography." The bulletin does not describe a numeric score report. To pass, you need 70%, or 56 of 80 questions; the topics are in our NYC TLC exam study guide.
Retakes: the current rule and the proposed change
The current rule (PSI bulletin and TLC center list): you can retake the exam as many times as you need until your TLC application expires. You must wait 24 hours between attempts, and each attempt costs $49.
The proposed change: the TLC held a public hearing on December 17, 2025, on a proposed rule that would allow one attempt every 30 days and no more than three attempts in the 90-day application window. As of October 23, 2026, the TLC proposed rules page lists no Commission vote on it, and PSI still describes the current rule. Check both pages before you plan on a quick retake.
