The stakes

Your score sets your list number

Everyone who passes and meets the requirements goes on the eligible list in final score order, and MTA New York City Transit considers candidates when their names are reached. Here is how hiring works:

1

You apply on OASys

File during the filing period and final-submit the Education and Experience Exam. Exam 7603 filing ran July 1 to 28, 2026, with a $91 fee.

2

You take the test

A multiple-choice test on nine abilities, at a computer or on paper. Exam 7603 testing is expected to begin December 5, 2026.

3

Your score sets your list number

Pass with 70% or more and you join the eligible list in final score order.

4

Medical exam and drug screening

When your name is reached, you must pass both. Train Operators get random drug and alcohol tests for as long as they hold the job.

5

Training and probation

New Train Operators may have to complete a training course during probation.

A higher score means an earlier call. That's why you practice before test day.

Know every section before test day

1

Written Comprehension

Understand written sentences and paragraphs, such as a bulletin about a service change.

2

Written Expression

Use English words and sentences so that others understand what you wrote, such as in an incident report.

3

Problem Sensitivity

Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, such as an object on the track ahead.

4

Deductive Reasoning

Apply a stated rule to a specific case and pick the logical action, such as a rule for leaving a terminal.

5

Information Ordering

Follow a given rule or set of steps in the correct order, such as the steps of a pre-trip inspection of a train.

6

Spatial Orientation

Tell where you are in relation to a place, or where a place is in relation to you. The real notice describes reading a subway map; our practice uses our own drawn grid maps, not the real subway map.

7

Number Facility

Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and correctly, such as track-marker math to find your location. A four-function calculator is allowed on the real test.

8

Visualization

Imagine how something looks after it is turned, flipped or unfolded. The real notice describes pictures, such as a scene seen in the front window and then rotated in the rearview mirror; our practice uses our own drawn layouts that are turned or mirrored.

9

Customer Service

Give passengers information in a professional and courteous way, such as directions to a location.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is the MTA train operator exam in 2026?

For Exam 7603, multiple-choice testing is expected to begin on Saturday, December 5, 2026. Filing ran from July 1 to July 28, 2026, and is closed. Your Admission Letter, with your own date and location, appears on your OASys Dashboard 14 days before testing begins. The promotion exam, 7703, tests from the same day.

How many questions are on the train operator exam, and how long is it?

That is not published. Notice 7603 lists the abilities the test may measure, but it gives no question count, no time limit and no weight for each ability. As history only, the proposed answer key for a past form, Exam 4605 on May 18, 2024, lists 60 questions with four choices each.

What score do I need to pass?

At least 70%. If you pass and meet the requirements, you go on the eligible list in final score order with a list number, so a higher score means an earlier call. Eligible veterans can ask for Veterans' Credit before the list is established.

Can I bring a calculator?

Yes. The notice allows a hand-held, battery or solar calculator that is numeric only and does just addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Phones, smartwatches, smart glasses and other electronic devices are not allowed in the building.

How do I become an MTA train operator?

Notice 7603 asks for a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent, a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in New York State and one year of full-time work continuous with one employer, plus the Education and Experience Exam in OASys. Then you pass the multiple-choice test, wait for your list number to be reached and pass the medical exam and drug screening. NYC residency is not required, and the notice states no minimum age.

How much does a train operator make?

Notice 7603 gives $41.16 per hour to start for a 40-hour week, rising to $42.00 per hour in the second year of service. The rates are subject to change. Benefits listed include night and weekend differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a medical plan and a pension plan.

What happens after the test?

Results come by email. Passing candidates who meet the requirements are placed on an eligible list in final score order, and the promotion list from Exam 7703 is considered first. When your name is reached, you must pass a medical exam and a drug screening, and Train Operators get random drug and alcohol tests for as long as they work in the title. You may have to complete a training course during probation.

When is the next MTA train operator exam?

Not announced. The MTA exam schedule listed no Train Operator window as of October 23, 2026. The open competitive exams on record are list 7604 (2018), Exam 4605 (tested in 2024) and Exam 7603 (testing from December 2026). Join the list on this page and we will email you when practice tests open.
