Requirements and hiring steps from Notice of Examination No. 7603, as of October 2026, with the hiring-day details from the Train Operator careers page.
If you are asking how to become an MTA train operator, or how to become a train operator in NYC, the path runs through a civil service exam. For MTA train operator jobs, MTA New York City Transit hires subway Train Operators from an eligible list ranked by the score on a multiple-choice test, and the current open competitive exam is Exam No. 7603. This guide covers the MTA train operator requirements in that notice, the hiring steps after the test, the medical and drug rules and the training, with each fact tied to its source.
What a Train Operator does
Notice 7603 says Train Operators, under supervision, "have direct responsibility for the safe, timely and proper operation" of subway cars and trains. They carry passengers on assigned routes, may open and close doors and make announcements, run work trains and revenue collection trains, switch cars in yards, prepare trains for service and take trains in for inspection, repair and car washes.
The physical side matters for the medical exam. The notice lists climbing ladders on and off the tracks, stepping down from trains and catwalks to the roadbed, walking along elevated track, responding to alarm bells, whistles, horns and radio, telling colored lights apart, using manual equipment, sitting for long periods and lifting heavy equipment. Train Operators may work nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and they must be available for overtime.
MTA train operator requirements
Notice 7603 lists three requirements:
- Education: a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization. (The careers page gives a GED certificate as an example of an equivalent.)
- License: a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
- Experience: one year of full-time satisfactory work experience that has been continuous with one employer.
Deadlines: for Exam 7603, the experience and license requirements had to be met by the last day of filing, July 28, 2026. Under section 54(2) of the New York State Civil Service Law, the education requirement can be met later, by July 28, 2027.
Driving record: the notice warns, "If you have serious moving violations, a license suspension or an accident record, you may be disqualified." It does not define "serious" or give a look-back period.
Part-time work and the one-year rule
Part-time work that was continuous with one employer counts on a prorated basis. The notice gives the formula: (hours worked per week / 35) x (months worked). Its own example is 21 hours a week for 12 months: 21/35 x 12 = 7.2 months, which is short of the 12 months needed. At 35 hours or more a week, a month counts as a full month.
The Education and Experience Exam
For Exam 7603, you reported your education and work history in the Education and Experience Exam (EEE) in OASys and had to "Final Submit" it by midnight Eastern time on July 28, 2026. After that, no new information could be added. The notice adds that you may take the test before your qualifications are checked, and anyone marked "Not Qualified" gets no score and no refund.
What the notice does not require
- No minimum age is stated in Notice 7603.
- No NYC residency: "New York City residency is not required for this position."
- No commercial driver license (CDL) is mentioned; the license rule is a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in New York State.
- No college is required.
You must also be able to understand and be understood in English, and you must prove your identity and your right to work in the United States before you are hired.
The hiring steps, from filing to training
- File during an open window. Exam 7603 was filed in OASys from July 1 to July 28, 2026, with a $91 fee. That window is closed, and the next one is not posted on the MTA exam schedule as of October 23, 2026.
- Final-submit the Education and Experience Exam by the filing deadline.
- Take the multiple-choice test. For 7603, testing is expected to begin on Saturday, December 5, 2026. You need 70% to pass. See how the train operator exam works for test day and appeals.
- Get your list number. Passing candidates who meet the requirements go on an eligible list in final score order, and results come by email. The notice does not say when the list will be established.
- Wait for your name to be reached. Candidates are considered in list order. The promotion list from Exam 7703 is used first, so current NYC Transit employees on that list are considered before the open competitive list.
- Pass the medical exam and drug screening. See the next section.
- Complete training and probation. The notice says you may be required to complete a formal training course during probation, and failing it may lead to termination.
Hiring days, per the careers page: the undated careers page describes processing at 180 Livingston Street in Brooklyn. On the first day, you take a drug test, which it says takes 48 to 72 hours to process. On the second day, you have a medical assessment and staff go over the job, benefits and training. It also says training classes are scheduled regularly. The notice does not describe these days, so treat them as a guide, not a rule.
Medical and drug rules
- Medical: "Medical guidelines have been established for this position." You are examined to see whether you can perform the essential functions of the job, with reasonable accommodation for a disability where appropriate. The guidelines themselves are not published in the notice.
- Drug screening: you must pass one to be hired, and Train Operators are subject to random drug and alcohol tests for as long as they work in the title.
- Past positive or refused DOT tests: because this is a safety-sensitive position, anyone who tested positive or refused a test with a federal DOT-regulated employer must have finished the federal Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) process before being hired.
The other route: promotion through Exam 7703
Some people become Train Operators by promotion. Exam No. 7703 is open to permanent Conductors, Tower Operators and Bus Operators at NYC Transit, and to some other NYC Transit employees who completed the NYC Transit Certificate Program for Train Operator and have three years of full-time work, including at least one year with NYC Transit. On 7703, the test is 85% of the final score and seniority is 15%. Filing for 7703 ran from August 1 to August 28, 2026.
How long does it take?
No official source gives a timeline. The notice gives no list date, and past lists took a long time: the previous open competitive list, 7604, was established on September 19, 2018, and Exam 4605, tested in 2024, had no list in NYC Open Data as of October 23, 2026. Training length is not published either.
