The stakes

Your score sets your list number

Everyone who passes is ranked by score, and candidates are considered for hiring in list order. The background check, physical test and medical steps come later, but your score decides when you are called. Here is how hiring works:

1

You apply on OASys

File online during the filing period. For Exam 7324 the fee is $61, and many applicants qualify for a waiver.

2

You take the test

A multiple-choice test on a computer at a DCAS testing center.

3

Your score sets your list number

Pass with 70% or more and you join the eligible list in score order.

4

Calls go in list order

Candidates are called in list order for the background check, physical test and medical steps.

A higher score means an earlier call. That's why you practice before test day.

Deductive ReasoningBasic

Delmont High School late arrival rule (made up): A student who arrives after 8:15 AM goes through the scanner and then goes to the attendance window for a late pass. A student who arrives after 8:15 AM with a note signed by a doctor or a dentist also goes through the scanner, but then leaves the note at the front desk and goes straight to class. A student who arrives after 10:00 AM waits at the front desk until a parent or guardian is reached by phone.

At 9:05 AM, student Adaeze Abernathy arrives with a note signed by her dentist.

What should happen next?

Deductive ReasoningBasic

Delmont High School package rule (made up): A package addressed to a named staff member is signed for at the main door and placed on the shelf behind the front desk. Food for the cafeteria goes to the loading dock on Garnet Street, not the main door. If a package is leaking or gives off a strong smell, no one touches it, and the agent calls the post supervisor. A package with no person's name on it is refused.

At 11:10 AM, a courier brings a dry, sealed box with no smell to the main door. The label reads "Ms. Margit Bergstrom, Room 214."

Frequently asked questions

What do I get for free?

You get free study guides that explain Exam 7324, the requirements, the 9 abilities and what happens after the test, all written from official NYC sources, plus 30 free practice questions with explanations. You also get one free 15-question practice test that mixes every ability, with your score, an ability-by-ability breakdown and every answer explained. Full access adds unlimited 40-question practice sets, tests on one ability at a time, targeted drills on your weakest abilities and a readiness score.

How many questions are on the real exam, and how long is it?

That is not published. The official notice lists the abilities the test may cover, but it gives no question count, no time limit and no weight for each ability. Our practice sets are 40 questions, our own length, with questions spread evenly across the abilities. That spread is our choice, not the City's weighting.

When can I apply for Exam 7324, and what does it cost?

The filing period for Exam 7324 runs from October 7, 2026, to November 25, 2026. You apply online through OASys at www.nyc.gov/examsforjobs, or online at a DCAS testing center. The application fee is $61. It may be waived for New York City high school students, first-time test takers, veterans, unemployed people and people receiving public assistance or supplementary security income. Testing is expected to begin on Tuesday, January 19, 2027.

What score do I need to pass?

You need at least 70% to pass. Passing places you on the eligible list in score order with a list number. Eligible veterans can get 5 extra points (10 for disabled veterans), added only to a passing score and only if claimed before the list is established.

Why does my score matter if I only need 70%?

Because the list is ranked by score, and the list sets the order in which candidates are considered for hiring. A higher score means a lower list number and an earlier call. No official source says what score is high enough to be hired, so the goal is simply the best score you can get.

What happens on test day?

Your Admission Notice appears on your OASys Dashboard 14 days before testing is expected to begin. Bring one valid ID with your photo and signature, with a name that matches your application. Phones, smartwatches and other devices are sealed in a pouch until the exam is over. Calculators are not allowed on this exam. You get immediate, tentative results at the end of the test.

What happens after I pass?

Candidates are called in list order. Before appointment there is a background check by the NYC Police Department, a qualifying physical test, a drug screening and a medical and psychological assessment. At appointment, you must qualify for Special Patrolman status, which requires being at least 21, a US citizen and a New York City resident.

Who can take the exam?

The notice sets no minimum age for taking the test. To be appointed you need a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent (by November 25, 2027) and must meet the Special Patrolman requirements at appointment: at least 21 years old, a US citizen, a New York City resident unless exempted by law, of good moral character and with no felony conviction. You must also understand and be understood in English.

Are these real exam questions?

No. DCAS publishes no sample questions for this exam. All our questions are original practice content written from the official ability definitions. Memory questions hide the study material before you answer, map questions use drawn floor plans, and visualization questions use drawings of rooms and x-ray images that you picture from another door or after they are turned.
