Deductive Reasoning

Apply a set of general rules to a specific case and pick the logical answer.

Question 1 (easy)

Maple Hill High School visitor rule: A visitor may go past the front desk only if (1) the visitor shows a photo ID and is on the day's appointment list, or (2) a staff member comes to the desk, escorts the visitor and signs the visitor log.

At 9:15 AM, Agent Tanya Brooks is at the front desk.

Which visitor may go past the desk?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The tutor meets the second condition: a staff member, the guidance counselor, escorts the tutor and signs the visitor log. The parent has a photo ID but meets neither condition, because she is not on the list and has no escort. The repair worker is on the list but has no photo ID, and the former student's escort did not sign the log, which the second condition requires.

Question 2 (medium)

Maple Hill High School entry rules: Every student is checked at the entrance each morning. A student with a medical device that cannot go through the scanner shows a card from the school nurse and is checked with a hand-held wand instead. A student who sets off the scanner twice is searched by hand in the private screening room. Any student checked in after 8:40 AM is then sent to the attendance office for a late pass before going to class.

At 8:52 AM, student Aaliyah Grant arrives and shows a nurse's card for an insulin pump.

What should happen next?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The nurse's card means she is checked with the hand-held wand, not the scanner, and because she arrived at 8:52 AM, after 8:40 AM, she then goes to the attendance office for a late pass. Sending her straight to class skips the late pass. The scanner is the wrong check for a student with a nurse's card, and the rules put the late pass after the check, not before it.

Question 3 (hard)

Maple Hill High School reporting rules:

  1. (1)If a crime is in progress and anyone is in danger, radio for help first and then act to protect people.
  2. (2)If a crime has already happened and the suspect is still on school property, radio the post supervisor and keep the suspect in view without leaving your post unattended.
  3. (3)If a crime has already happened and the suspect has left school property, notify the post supervisor and the principal, and write an incident report before the end of your tour.
  4. (4)If property was stolen and nobody saw who took it, report it to the principal on the daily report.

At 1:10 PM, a teacher tells Agent Luis Romero that her laptop was taken from her classroom during lunch. A student saw an older teenager carry a laptop out the side door and get into a car that drove away about 20 minutes ago.

What should Agent Romero do?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The theft has already happened, and the teenager drove away, which means the suspect has left school property: rule 3 applies. Rule 1 is for a crime in progress with someone in danger, and rule 2 is for a suspect who is still on the property. Rule 4 does not fit, because a student saw who carried the laptop out, even though the teenager's name is not known.

Question 4 (hard)

Maple Hill High School badge rules: Parents and guardians get a green badge. Contractors and repair workers get an orange badge. Staff from other City agencies get a blue badge. A visitor who fits more than one group gets the badge that matches the purpose of today's visit. Any visitor who expects to stay past 3:00 PM also gets a red "PM" sticker on the badge.

At 2:30 PM, Carmen Ruiz signs in. She is the mother of a ninth grader and works as an electrician for a private company. Today she is here to repair the gym lights, a job she expects to finish at about 4:00 PM.

Which badge should she get?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. She is both a parent and a repair worker, and the rule gives the badge that matches the purpose of today's visit, which is the gym repair: orange. She expects to stay until about 4:00 PM, past 3:00 PM, which adds the red sticker. A green badge follows her role as a parent instead of today's purpose, and leaving off the sticker ignores her expected finish time.

Inductive Reasoning

Combine separate facts or observations to reach a general conclusion.

Question 5 (easy)

Several students tell Agent Grace Kim that the second-floor girls' restroom at Maple Hill High School has no soap. She learns these facts: The custodian refills every soap dispenser at 7:00 AM. A note from the custodian says the second-floor dispenser was refilled this morning. All the complaints came after 11:00 AM. Lunch starts at 10:45 AM, and the second-floor restroom is the one next to the cafeteria. At noon, Agent Kim checks and finds the dispenser empty. The other restrooms have soap all day.

Which conclusion do these facts best support?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The dispenser was filled at 7:00 AM, the complaints start after lunch begins, and the restroom next to the cafeteria was empty at noon, which points to heavy use after lunch. The empty dispenser Agent Kim found shows that the complaints are valid. The custodian's note says the refill was done, and the other restrooms have soap all day, which rules out every restroom running out.

Question 6 (medium)

Over two weeks, staff at Maple Hill High School find the side door by the gym propped open with folded cardboard. Agent Andre Dubois learns these facts: The door has been found propped only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, each time between 3:10 PM and 3:30 PM. Classes end at 2:50 PM every weekday. Basketball practice is held in the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays and starts at 3:15 PM. Camera footage shows the door closed at 3:00 PM on each of those days. The door is the closest one to the bus stop.

Which conclusion do these facts best support?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The door is propped only on the two practice days and only in the minutes around the 3:15 PM start, which points to people going to or from practice. Students leave for the bus every weekday after classes end at 2:50 PM, but the door is not propped on the other three days. The camera shows the door closed at 3:00 PM, which rules out the morning crew, and the folded cardboard shows that someone props it, not a faulty door.

Question 7 (hard)

Teachers at Maple Hill High School report that items left in the lost-and-found bin outside Room 210 keep disappearing. Agent Priya Natarajan learns these facts: Each afternoon at 3:30 PM, after classes end, a teacher lists what is in the bin. Items are found missing only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, when the bin is checked against the list from the afternoon before. An adult evening class meets in Room 210 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The evening custodian empties the trash on every floor every weeknight. The bin is moved into a locked office on Friday afternoons.

Which conclusion do these facts best support?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. Items vanish only between the 3:30 PM list and the next morning, and only after Mondays and Wednesdays, the two nights the evening class meets beside the bin. The list is made after classes end, which means the items disappear after the school day, and the custodian works every weeknight, which does not fit a loss on just two nights. The bin goes to the locked office on Friday, not on the nights when items go missing.

Information Ordering

Follow a given rule or set of steps in the correct order.

Question 8 (easy)

Maple Hill High School procedure for a visitor without an appointment:

  1. (1)Ask for a photo ID.
  2. (2)Check the name on the ID against the barred-visitor list.
  3. (3)Call the office the visitor wants to visit.
  4. (4)If the office agrees, write the visitor's name, time in and destination in the visitor log.
  5. (5)Give the visitor a badge.

Agent Omar Khalil has checked a visitor's photo ID, and the name is not on the barred-visitor list.

What should he do next?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. He has finished Steps 1 and 2, which makes Step 3, calling the office, next. Writing in the log is Step 4, and it depends on the office agreeing first. Giving the badge is the last step, and the procedure does not ask for a second ID.

Question 9 (medium)

Maple Hill High School incident reports must list events in the order they happened. Agent Kevin Walsh wrote these notes about a student who fell, in no particular order:

1. 10:20 AM: the school nurse arrived at Stairwell B.

2. 10:12 AM: student Jamal Reed fell on the stairs in Stairwell B.

3. 10:15 AM: Agent Walsh radioed for the nurse.

4. 10:31 AM: the main office called Jamal's mother.

5. 10:14 AM: Agent Walsh reached Stairwell B.

In what order should the notes appear in his report?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. In time order the events are 10:12 (note 2), 10:14 (note 5), 10:15 (note 3), 10:20 (note 1) and 10:31 (note 4). Putting note 3 before note 5 has him radio before he reached the stairwell, which the times do not show. Starting with note 5 puts his arrival before the fall, and putting note 1 before note 3 has the nurse arrive before she was called.

Question 10 (hard)

Maple Hill High School fire drill steps for the agent at the front desk:

  1. (1)Stop all entry at the main door.
  2. (2)Radio the post supervisor with the number of visitors signed in.
  3. (3)Lead the signed-in visitors out to the north sidewalk.
  4. (4)Check the visitor restroom.
  5. (5)Take the visitor log outside.

Exception: if smoke or fire is reported at the main entrance itself, skip Step 4, do Step 5 before leading visitors out, lead visitors out through the south door instead of to the north sidewalk, and make the radio call in Step 2 only after you are outside.

The alarm sounds, and a teacher shouts that there is smoke by the main entrance. Agent Rosa Mendez has stopped all entry.

In what order should she do the remaining steps?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. Smoke at the main entrance triggers the exception: she skips the restroom check, takes the log before leading visitors out, uses the south door and radios only once she is outside. Radioing first and checking the restroom follow the normal steps instead. Radioing before leading visitors out breaks the rule to call only from outside, and leading visitors out before taking the log reverses the order the exception sets.

Memorization

Remember words, numbers, pictures or procedures after studying them.

Show the notice: Main entrance post notice (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)

Main entrance post notice, Maple Hill High School, Tuesday.

Agent Mei Lin Chen works the scanner from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Agent Darnell Cooper covers the visitor desk. The spare radio battery is in the top drawer of the visitor desk. The first aid kit is on the wall beside Stairwell B.

Expected visitors: a fire alarm inspector at 9:30 AM, going to the boiler room, and Patricia Owens, a parent, at 10:15 AM, meeting the guidance counselor in Room 114.

Side Door 3, on the gym hallway, stays locked all day for repairs.

Question 11 (easy)

Based on the notice you just studied, where is the first aid kit?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The notice puts the first aid kit on the wall beside Stairwell B. The top drawer of the visitor desk holds the spare radio battery. The boiler room is where the inspector is going, and Room 114 is where Patricia Owens meets the guidance counselor.

Question 12 (medium)

Based on the notice you just studied, when is Patricia Owens expected, and where is she going?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. Patricia Owens is expected at 10:15 AM to meet the guidance counselor in Room 114. The 9:30 AM time and the boiler room belong to the fire alarm inspector. The other options mix her details with his.

Show the notice: Cafeteria report, fifth period (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)

Cafeteria report, Maple Hill High School, Thursday, fifth period.

At 11:42 AM, two students argued near Table 6. Agent Dana Price separated them. Student Marcus Hill was taken to the dean's office in Room 106. Student Theo Lambert went to the nurse in Room 108 with a scraped hand.

At 11:55 AM, a gray backpack found under Table 9 was taken to the main office. The east cafeteria doors were locked at noon because of a wet floor; use the west doors.

Question 13 (medium)

Based on the report you just studied, where was the gray backpack found?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The report says the gray backpack was found under Table 9 and taken to the main office. Table 6 is where the two students argued. The east doors were locked because of a wet floor, and Room 106 is the dean's office.

Question 14 (hard)

Based on the report you just studied, which student went to the nurse, and in which room is the nurse?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. Theo Lambert went to the nurse in Room 108 with a scraped hand. Marcus Hill was taken to the dean's office, which is Room 106. The other options pair one student's name with the other student's room.

Problem Sensitivity

Notice when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.

Question 15 (easy)

At 7:50 AM, Agent Hector Alvarez is working the entrance scanners at Maple Hill High School as students arrive. Which of these most clearly needs his attention right away?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. A bag that set off the scanner has not been cleared, and the student is leaving with it, which means a prohibited item could enter the building. The parent already has a badge and is waiting where she should, and the driver is signing in as required. A question about the lost-and-found bin can wait a moment.

Question 16 (medium)

At 8:30 AM, a father comes to the front desk at Maple Hill High School and says loudly that his daughter is being bullied. He demands to go to her classroom right now. Agent Simone Baptiste explains that he must sign in and wait for a counselor to come down.

Which detail most clearly shows that the situation is likely to get worse?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. Stepping toward the hallway door shows that he may try to go past the desk without signing in, which would put an upset visitor in the building with no escort. Speaking loudly shows he is upset, but he is still talking with the agent at the desk. Calling the principal and mentioning earlier calls are ways of complaining through proper channels.

Question 17 (hard)

At 3:30 PM, Agent Neil Brennan reviews the Maple Hill High School visitor log. Every visitor must sign out and return the badge when leaving. The last assembly in the auditorium ended at 2:00 PM, and the gym is in use until 5:00 PM.

Which entry most clearly needs to be checked right away?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The guest speaker went to an assembly that ended at 2:00 PM, yet 90 minutes later there is no sign-out and the badge is still out, which means nobody knows where this visitor is. The contractor arrived only 10 minutes ago and is working in the gym, which is in use until 5:00 PM. The parent's badge is in the return box, showing that she left and only missed signing out, and the plumber's entry is complete.

Question 18 (medium)

At 7:15 AM, before students arrive, Agent Farah Siddiqui patrols Stairwell C at Maple Hill High School. She notices four things. Which one is most likely to cause a problem?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. A street door propped open lets anyone walk in without being scanned or signed in, a security problem that grows once students arrive. The elevator sign already warns people, and the handrail paint is dry. A poster taped to a wall causes no safety problem.

Spatial Orientation

Work out where you are in relation to an object, or where it is in relation to you, such as on a floor plan.

Question 19 (easy)

Use the map. Agent Tomas Rivera is at the Main Entrance when a teacher calls for help in the Library. In which direction is the Library from the Main Entrance?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. North is at the top of the map. The Library is in the top row, right of center, and the Main Entrance is in the bottom row at the far left, which puts the Library up and to the right: northeast. The Library is not level with the Main Entrance, which rules out plain east, and it is to the right, which rules out north and northwest.

Question 20 (medium)

Use the map. Agent Brianna Scott is at the Main Entrance with a delivery that must go to one of four rooms.

Moving only along gray hallway squares and obeying the one-way arrows, which of these rooms can she reach by walking on the fewest hallway squares?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The arrow on the hallway square between the Cafeteria and the Gym points south, which means she cannot walk north up that hallway. She must go east along the lower hallway and north beside the east end of the Gym: 8 squares to Room 102, 9 to Room 101, 10 to the Library and 12 to the Nurse. The Nurse looks closest, but the arrow sends her the long way around.

Question 21 (hard)

Use the map. The nurse radios for help with a student who will not calm down. Agent Wesley Park is in the Guidance office. Moving only along gray hallway squares and obeying the one-way arrows, how many hallway squares does he walk on along the quickest route to the Nurse? Count every hallway square on the route, including the first one next to the Guidance and the last one next to the Nurse.

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The arrow between the Cafeteria and the Gym points south, which blocks the short way north. He walks 2 squares east along the lower hallway, 2 squares north beside the east end of the Gym and 4 squares west along the top hallway, 8 in all. The answer 6 is the route north beside the Cafeteria that the arrow does not allow, and 7 and 9 miscount the squares.

Visualization

Picture how something would look after it is moved, turned or rearranged, such as a bag on an x-ray screen.

Question 22 (easy)

Use the drawing. Agent Joy Okafor reports to the main lobby to open the post. The drawing shows the lobby from above, with north at the top. She comes in through the South Door, so she faces north.

From where she stands, which item is in the far right corner?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. Facing north, the same way the drawing is printed, her right is east, and the far right corner is the northeast corner, where the Bulletin Board is. The Visitor Desk is in the far left corner, and the Water Fountain is in the near right corner. The Bench is in the near left corner.

Question 23 (medium)

Use the drawing. At the entrance, Agent Malik Johnson sees scissors on the x-ray image of a student's backpack. The drawing shows that first image, seen from above, with the front of the bag at the bottom. The bag is sent through again after being turned a quarter turn clockwise, with nothing inside it moved.

On the second image, seen the same way, where are the Scissors?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. A quarter turn clockwise moves the left side of the bag to the top, and the bottom left spot moves to the top left. The Scissors were at the bottom left, which puts them at the top left on the second image. Bottom right is the answer for a counterclockwise turn, top right for a half turn and bottom left for no turn at all.

Question 24 (hard)

Use the drawing. Agent Erin Cole is checking a supervisor's drawings of the entrance scanning area. Compare the Original drawing with Plans A through D. Exactly one plan shows the same scanning area rotated, with every item in its place. Each other plan shows a mirror image or has two items swapped.

Which plan is it?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. Turning the original a quarter turn clockwise puts the Desk across the top left, the Bag Belt down the right side, the Wand Rack at the bottom right and the Log Stand at the bottom left, which matches Plan C. Plan B looks the same except that the Bin Cart and the Log Stand have traded places. Plans A and D are mirror images of the room, which no turn can produce.

Written Comprehension

Understand written sentences and paragraphs, such as a memo or an incident report.

Question 25 (easy)

Maple Hill High School memo, early dismissal on Friday: Classes end at 12:30 PM instead of 2:50 PM on Friday because of parent-teacher conferences. Buses will leave at 12:45 PM. Students in the after-school program stay in the cafeteria until 3:00 PM, when a parent picks them up. Parents coming for conferences enter through the main door only, starting at 1:00 PM, and must sign in at the visitor desk. The side doors stay locked all afternoon.

According to the memo, which statement is correct?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The memo says parents coming for conferences enter through the main door and must sign in at the visitor desk. Buses leave at 12:45 PM, not 12:30 PM, and the side doors stay locked, which means parents may use only the main door. After-school students wait in the cafeteria, not in their classrooms.

Question 26 (medium)

Maple Hill High School directive, testing week: During state testing week, no visitors are allowed above the first floor from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, except staff from the testing office, who must show a testing office ID. Deliveries are accepted only at the loading dock and only after 12:00 PM. Parents who come to pick up a sick child wait in the main office, and the nurse brings the child down. A visitor who arrives for an appointment during testing hours is offered a new time after 12:00 PM. Agents at the front desk keep a separate list of every person sent above the first floor during testing hours.

At 10:15 AM, a mother arrives to pick up her son, who has a fever.

According to the directive, what should happen?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The directive says a parent picking up a sick child waits in the main office while the nurse brings the child down. A new time is offered to visitors with appointments, not to a parent picking up a sick child. Going upstairs, with a photo ID or with her name on the list, breaks the rule against visitors above the first floor during testing hours, since only testing office staff with ID may go up.

Question 27 (hard)

Incident report, Agent Carla Jimenez, Maple Hill High School, Wednesday: At 2:05 PM, I heard shouting in the third-floor hallway near Room 312. I found two students, Devon Harris and Mateo Ortega, pushing each other. I told them to stop, and they did. Devon said that Mateo had taken his phone. Mateo said that he had found the phone on the floor and was about to hand it to a teacher. At 2:09 PM, Assistant Principal Gail Morrow arrived and took both students to her office. The phone was given to her. No one was hurt. I did not see who had the phone first.

According to the report, which statement is correct?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The report ends by saying the agent did not see who had the phone first. That Mateo took it from Devon is only Devon's claim, and Mateo gave a different account. The report says the phone was given to the assistant principal but not who gave it, and it says that no one was hurt and that she arrived at 2:09 PM, not 2:05 PM.

Written Expression

Use English words and sentences so that others understand what you wrote.

Question 28 (easy)

Agent Yusuf Demir's notes say: at 8:05 AM, visitor Paul Greene came to the front desk without an appointment and asked to see the principal; the principal was in a meeting; Mr. Greene left at 8:15 AM.

Which entry reports these facts most clearly and accurately?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. A gives every fact, adds nothing and uses two complete sentences. C joins two sentences with only a comma. B leaves out the 8:05 AM arrival time, and D says the principal refused to meet him, when the notes say only that the principal was in a meeting.

Question 29 (medium)

Agent Ruth Abrams's notes say: at 12:20 PM in the cafeteria, student Kayla Moore told her that student Tasha Lee had taken Kayla's lunch money; Agent Abrams spoke with Tasha, who denied it; Agent Abrams reported the matter to the dean.

Which version of her report is the clearest and most accurate?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. D gives every fact in order, names each person clearly and reports the theft as Kayla's claim. In A, "When I spoke with her" could mean either student. B states as fact that Tasha took the money, which the agent did not see, and C leaves out that Tasha denied it.

Question 30 (hard)

Agent Jonah Weiss's notes say: the main entrance scanner stopped working at 9:40 AM on Monday; he called the repair desk at 9:45 AM; a technician fixed the scanner at 11:10 AM; until then, agents checked 37 late-arriving students with hand-held wands.

Which version of his report is the clearest and most accurate?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. B states every fact correctly in clear, complete sentences. A says the technician used hand-held wands to fix the scanner, which is not what the notes say. C switches to the present tense with "I call," and D gives 73 students instead of 37.
