The DCAS exam schedule plans filing for Exam 7305 to begin on December 2, 2026, and filing for Exam 7306 to begin on April 7, 2027. These are planning dates. As of October 18, 2026, no notice has been posted for either exam, so the end of filing, the fee and the test dates are not known yet. The newest posted notice is Exam 6305, whose filing ran from April 1 to April 21, 2026. Sign up on our guide page, and we will email you when filing opens.
What does an Environmental Police Officer do, and where are the jobs?
Environmental Police Officers protect the watershed lands, water supply systems and installations of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which is why many people call this the DEP police exam. They patrol reservoirs and water supply facilities by car and on foot, enforce the City's Watershed Rules and Regulations, investigate suspicious people and events, make arrests and report contamination of streams. Exam 6305 says the jobs are currently outside New York City and in the Bronx. A post can be in the Bronx or in Westchester, Dutchess, Greene, Sullivan, Putnam, Delaware, Ulster, Orange or Schoharie County.
Is this the same as a New York State Environmental Conservation Officer?
No. Environmental Police Officer is a New York City title at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), filled through a DCAS exam. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) hires Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) through its own Civil Service exam, which DEC says the NYS Department of Civil Service holds on a recurring basis, typically every two to four years. Environmental police in other states are separate employers too. Our guides cover only the NYC title.
What is on the test?
A multiple-choice test at a computer that may cover nine abilities: Deductive Reasoning, Inductive Reasoning, Information Ordering, Memorization, Problem Sensitivity, Spatial Orientation, Visualization, Written Comprehension and Written Expression. The notice publishes no question count, no time limit and no weight for each ability. Calculators are not allowed, and some questions may be answered from documents handed out on the test date.
Do I need college credits?
By the date of appointment, you need a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent plus one of these: 24 college semester credits with at least a 2.0 index, two years of honorable full-time US military service or one year of law enforcement experience. The 2024 to 2025 notice (Exam 5304) asked for 30 credits; Exams 6304 and 6305 ask for 24. Requirements can change with each notice, so check the one for your exam.
What is the age limit for the NYC Environmental Police Officer exam?
At least 16 to take the test and at least 20 to be appointed. To be appointed, you must also be under 35 on the first day of the application period. Time on military duty, as defined in New York State Military Law section 243, can be subtracted from your age, up to seven years.
How much does an NYC Environmental Police Officer make?
Exam 6305 lists $52,333 for the first 26 weeks, $60,038 after 26 weeks and $80,391 after six and a half years at Assignment Level I, plus an annual uniform allowance, longevity pay, Welfare Fund benefits and City-paid health insurance. The title has three assignment levels, and new officers are appointed at Level I. In official City payroll data for fiscal year 2025, the 179 payroll records for the title at DEP had an average base salary rate of $79,766, and overtime was paid on top. Our salary guide explains the difference.
Is there a physical test?
Yes. The notice requires a qualifying physical test, along with medical and psychological assessments and drug screening, but it does not describe what the physical test consists of. During the 24-month probation, the Police Academy also has firearms, academic, physical performance and driving tests.
What score do I need to pass?
At least 70%. Passing places you on the eligible list in final score order with a list number, and the list is usually active for four years. A higher score means a lower list number and an earlier call. No official source says what score is high enough to be hired.
Are these real exam questions?
No. DCAS publishes no sample questions for this exam. All our questions are original practice content written from the official ability definitions, set at made-up reservoirs and water supply facilities. The notice does not describe how Spatial Orientation and Visualization questions look, so our practice for those uses our own drawn maps and layouts.
