These 30 practice questions show the kind of questions and explanations you get with PrepRaven. They cover all 9 abilities from the latest official notice (Exam No. 6305) for the NYC Environmental Police Officer Exam, three or four for each ability, from easy to hard. Every question is original. None of them is a real exam question.
Use this free Environmental Police Officer practice test as a study guide for the 2026 Environmental Police Officer exam. The DCAS schedule plans Exam 7305 with filing beginning on December 2, 2026; its notice is not posted yet, so the abilities here come from the latest notice, Exam 6305. The questions are set where these officers work: the watershed lands, reservoirs and water supply facilities of DEP, outside the City and in the Bronx. Every rule, permit, code, name and place in them is made up for practice, so the answer always comes from what the question states, never from real DEP rules.
The notice's examples for Memorization and Visualization mention the details of a fleeing suspect or vehicle and comparing a suspect's face to a photograph. PrepRaven does not offer face or picture questions. Our memory questions use written alerts and briefings, our map questions use drawn road maps and our visualization questions use drawn rooms and trays, in our own format. Calculators are not allowed on the real test, and none of these questions needs one.
Deductive Reasoning
Apply a general rule to a specific case, such as deciding whether a person accused of trespassing on reservoir land should be arrested.
Question 1 (easy)
Made-up trespass rule for the Wrenmoor Hollow watershed lands: A person inside a posted No Entry area may be arrested for trespass only if an officer has told the person to leave and the person refuses. A person who leaves when told gets a written warning instead. A person in an area that is not posted may not be charged with trespass.
At 6:40 AM, Officer Nadira Qadir checks four people near the Wrenmoor Hollow Dam.
Who may be arrested for trespass under this rule?
- A. A jogger on the unposted service road who keeps running after the officer calls out to her to stop
- B. A woman in the posted area by the intake who is told to leave and says she will stay until her photos are done
- C. A man fishing in the posted area below the dam who packs up and walks out as soon as he is told to leave
- D. A teenager in the posted area by the spillway who has not yet been spoken to by any officer
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Arrest needs both conditions: the person is in a posted No Entry area, and the person refuses after being told to leave. The woman by the intake meets both. The man below the dam left when told, so he gets a written warning. The teenager has not been told to leave yet, and the jogger is on a road that is not posted, so neither of them may be arrested.
Question 2 (medium)
Made-up fishing rule at Pellbrook Reservoir: Fishing from the shore requires a DEP access permit with a fishing tag. Fishing from a boat requires a fishing tag and a boat tag on the same permit, and the boat must be one that is stored at the reservoir. Fishing is allowed from 5:00 AM until 8:30 PM.
Officer Tobias Ventresca checks four people with access permits on a summer evening.
Which person is following the rule?
- A. At 8:40 PM, a woman whose permit has a fishing tag is casting from the shore near the spillway.
- B. At 6:00 PM, a man whose permit has a fishing tag and a boat tag is fishing from a rowboat he brought from home.
- C. At 7:00 PM, a woman whose permit has a fishing tag is fishing from a boat that is stored at the reservoir.
- D. At 8:15 PM, a man whose permit has a fishing tag is casting from the shore below the boat launch.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Shore fishing needs only the fishing tag, and it is allowed until 8:30 PM, so the man casting from the shore at 8:15 PM meets every condition. The woman on the shore at 8:40 PM is past the 8:30 PM limit. The man in the rowboat has both tags, but his boat is not stored at the reservoir, and the woman in the stored boat has no boat tag.
Question 3 (hard)
Made-up parking rule for the access roads at Tillmore Reservoir: Vehicles may park only in marked parking areas. A vehicle parked outside a marked area gets a summons unless it is a DEP vehicle, or its hazard lights are on and its driver is with it and says it has broken down. A vehicle that blocks a gate gets a summons in every case, and the officer must also call for a tow truck.
At 2:30 PM, Officer Ruth Adebowale drives the access roads.
For which vehicle must she write a summons and also call for a tow truck?
- A. A van with its hazard lights on, parked across the gate to the spillway road, with the driver beside it saying the engine died
- B. A sedan parked on the shoulder of the access road, with no driver anywhere nearby and no hazard lights on
- C. A DEP pickup parked on the grass beside the access road while its two-person crew checks a culvert
- D. A pickup with its hazard lights on, parked on the shoulder, with the driver inside saying the engine will not start
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A vehicle that blocks a gate gets a summons and a tow in every case, so the breakdown exception does not help the van parked across the spillway road gate. The sedan on the shoulder gets a summons but no tow, because it blocks no gate. The DEP pickup is exempt, and the pickup with its hazard lights on and its driver present fits the breakdown exception.
Question 4 (medium)
Made-up report codes for the West District: Code R1 is for a rules violation that harms nothing, such as a picnic in a closed area. Code R2 is for damage to DEP property. Code R3 is for anything that has entered the water or is about to, such as fuel, trash or soap. Code R4 is for a person who needs medical help. If more than one code fits, use the highest number that fits.
At 10:05 AM, Officer Fiona Gaudet finds a man washing his car with soap beside a stream that flows into the reservoir, and soapy water is running into the stream. While parking, he bent the post of a DEP sign. He shows no sign of injury or illness.
Which code should Officer Gaudet use?
- A. Code R1
- B. Code R2
- C. Code R3
- D. Code R4
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Two codes fit: soapy water running into the stream fits Code R3, and the bent sign post fits Code R2. The rule says to use the highest number that fits, which is Code R3. Code R1 is only for violations that harm nothing, and Code R4 does not fit, because the man shows no sign of needing medical help.
Inductive Reasoning
Combine separate facts to reach a general conclusion, such as how a department guideline applies to an incident at a water supply facility.
Question 5 (easy)
Officer Marisol Tafoya checks the pull-off on Coldwater Hill Road every evening at 9:00 PM and every morning at 6:00 AM. On three Tuesday mornings in a row, she finds bags of grass clippings and leaves dumped there, though the pull-off was empty at 9:00 PM the night before. Each time, the ground holds fresh tracks from a vehicle with two tires on each side of its rear axle. She finds no dumped bags on any other morning.
Which conclusion is best supported by these facts?
- A. Someone in a small car is dumping yard waste there during the day on Tuesdays, after the morning check.
- B. Someone with a large truck is dumping yard waste there on Monday afternoons, before the evening check.
- C. Several different people are dumping yard waste there on different nights of the week, in different vehicles.
- D. Someone with a dual-wheel truck is dumping yard waste there between the Monday evening and Tuesday morning checks.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The pull-off is empty at 9:00 PM Monday and has bags at 6:00 AM Tuesday, so the dumping happens overnight, and the tracks show a vehicle with dual rear wheels. A small car does not fit those tracks, and waste dumped after the Tuesday morning check would be found on Wednesday. Monday afternoon is ruled out by the empty pull-off at 9:00 PM, and bags appear only on Tuesday mornings, not on different nights.
Question 6 (medium)
Officer Hana Fujikawa takes these notes at the Spindle Creek intake.
Time5:50 AM.
Fencea new cut about 3 feet long by the shore path, with shiny cut ends and no rust.
Groundtwo sets of boot prints of clearly different sizes inside the fence, going to the water and back.
Shorean inflatable raft hidden in the brush, dry inside.
Road gate camerano people or vehicles from 8:00 PM to 5:50 AM.
Weatherheavy rain until 3:00 AM, and the boot prints are sharp and hold no water.
Which conclusion is best supported by these notes?
- A. Two people came in through the road gate before the heavy rain stopped at 3:00 AM.
- B. Two people came in through the cut fence after the heavy rain stopped at 3:00 AM.
- C. One person came in through the cut fence and walked to the water and back two times.
- D. Two people came in through the cut fence while the heavy rain was still falling.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The sharp prints that hold no water and the raft that is dry inside were left after the rain ended at 3:00 AM, and two sets of prints in different sizes mean two people. The camera shows no one at the road gate all night, which rules out the gate. Prints in two sizes cannot come from one person making two trips, and people who came in during the rain would have left soft, wet prints and a wet raft.
Question 7 (hard)
Officer Kareem Sadeghi reads the boating section of his district's guidelines, which were made up for this question. Boats used on the reservoir must be stored at the reservoir all year and may never be taken to other lakes or rivers. A boat that is new to the reservoir must be washed with hot water and then dried for five days before it goes in. Anglers may not bring live bait fish from outside the watershed. The section sets no limit on the number of boats, and it says nothing about engines, speed or life jackets.
Which purpose do these guidelines most likely share?
- A. Keeping plants, animals and other living things from other waters out of the reservoir
- B. Keeping the number of boats low enough that officers can watch every boat on the water
- C. Keeping boaters safe from collisions and other accidents while they are out on the water
- D. Keeping fuel and oil out of the water by limiting how often boat engines may be used
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Each guideline stops something from another body of water from reaching this one: boats never leave, new boats are washed in hot water and dried, and outside bait fish are banned. The section sets no limit on boats, so it is not about how many boats are out. It says nothing about speed, life jackets or engines, which rules out boater safety and fuel limits as its purpose.
Information Ordering
Follow a given rule or set of steps in the correct order, such as the next step when dealing with a disorderly person.
Question 8 (easy)
Made-up procedure when an officer sees a substance in a stream, done in this order:
- (1)Write down the time and the exact place.
- (2)Keep people and animals away from the water at that spot.
- (3)Radio the desk with the place and a description of what you see.
- (4)Take photos of the water and of any container or pipe nearby.
- (5)Stay at the scene until the water quality crew arrives.
Never touch or collect the substance yourself.
At 4:10 PM, Officer Imani Kuffour sees a rainbow-colored sheen on a brook below a road culvert. She writes down the time and place, then asks two hikers to keep their dog out of the brook.
What should she do next?
- A. Take photos of the sheen on the water and of the culvert pipe
- B. Fill a sample bottle with the water so that the crew can test it
- C. Radio the desk with the place and a description of the sheen
- D. Stay at the culvert until the water quality crew gets there
Show answer
Correct answer: C. She has done Step 1 (time and place) and Step 2 (keeping the dog out), so Step 3 comes next: radio the desk with the place and a description. Photos are Step 4, and staying for the crew is Step 5. Filling a sample bottle is never allowed, because the procedure says not to touch or collect the substance.
Question 9 (medium)
Made-up procedure for an injured visitor on a trail, done in this order:
- (1)Make sure the spot is safe for you and the visitor.
- (2)Radio the desk with your location, and ask for an ambulance if the visitor cannot walk.
- (3)Give first aid within your training.
- (4)Get the visitor's name and the names of any witnesses.
- (5)Write an injury report before the end of your tour.
If the visitor refuses first aid, write down the refusal and the time, and then go on to Step 4.
On the Ledgeview Trail, Officer Samuel Bjornstad finds a woman sitting on a rock with a cut on her hand. The trail is clear, and she says she can walk. He radios the desk with his location. She then tells him she does not want first aid.
What should he do next?
- A. Write down that she refused first aid and the time she refused
- B. Clean and bandage the cut on her hand, since that is within his training
- C. Ask the desk to send an ambulance to the trail for the woman
- D. Get her name and the names of any witnesses on the trail
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Steps 1 and 2 are done, and Step 3 is first aid, which she has refused. The rule for a refusal says to write down the refusal and the time first, and only then go on to Step 4. Getting names is Step 4, so it comes after the note. He may not give first aid she refused, and no ambulance is needed, because she can walk.
Question 10 (hard)
Made-up procedure for a vehicle crash on a reservoir road, done in this order:
- (1)Park the patrol car behind the crash with the emergency lights on.
- (2)Check whether anyone is hurt.
- (3)Radio the desk with the location and the number of people hurt.
- (4)Set out flares 100 feet behind the crash.
- (5)Direct traffic around the crash until help arrives.
- (6)Collect each driver's license, registration and insurance card.
If anyone is hurt, give first aid within your training right after Step 3 and before Step 4. If you smell fuel, use cones instead of flares in Step 4.
At 9:20 PM, Officer Leona Haugland parks behind a two-car crash on the dam road and turns on her emergency lights. One driver has a bleeding cut on his arm, and she smells gasoline. She radios the desk with the location and says one person is hurt.
What are her next two actions, in order?
- A. Set out cones 100 feet behind the crash, then give first aid to the driver
- B. Give first aid to the driver, then set out flares 100 feet behind the crash
- C. Set out cones 100 feet behind the crash, then direct traffic around the crash
- D. Give first aid to the driver, then set out cones 100 feet behind the crash
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Steps 1 to 3 are done. Because someone is hurt, first aid comes right after Step 3 and before Step 4, and because she smells gasoline, Step 4 uses cones instead of flares. Setting out cones before giving first aid gets the order wrong, flares break the fuel rule, and cones followed by directing traffic skips first aid.
Memorization
Remember words, numbers, pictures and procedures, such as the details of a person or vehicle leaving the scene of a crime.
Show the study material: Gate 7 vehicle alert (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)
Vehicle alert, East District, Saturday, 10:15 PM.
At 9:50 PM, a camera at Gate 7 of Kettlebrook Reservoir recorded a person cutting the gate chain. Two people then drove onto the access road in a silver Jeep Cherokee with New York plate LPW-3916, a black roof rack and a missing front bumper. The Jeep left at about 10:10 PM, heading north on Ridgeback Road.
Driver: a woman in her 40s with short red hair and a yellow rain jacket. Passenger: a tall man in a gray hooded sweatshirt.
Do not stop the Jeep alone. Radio its location to the desk.
Question 11 (easy)
Based on the alert you just studied, what color was the driver's rain jacket?
- A. Gray
- B. Yellow
- C. Red
- D. Silver
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The driver wore a yellow rain jacket. Gray is the passenger's hooded sweatshirt, red is the driver's hair and silver is the color of the Jeep.
Question 12 (hard)
Based on the alert you just studied, which description matches the Jeep?
- A. Silver, with a black roof rack and a missing rear bumper
- B. Gray, with a black roof rack and a missing front bumper
- C. Silver, with a black roof rack and a missing front bumper
- D. Silver, with a silver roof rack and a missing front bumper
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The alert describes a silver Jeep Cherokee with a black roof rack and a missing front bumper. The other choices each change one detail: the rear bumper instead of the front, gray (the passenger's sweatshirt) instead of silver and a silver roof rack instead of a black one.
Show the study material: North District briefing (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)
Tour briefing, North District, Tuesday, 6:45 AM. Sergeant Greta Ouellette.
Missing hiker: Owen Kagawa, 15, about 5 feet 4 inches tall, with a blue backpack and a white baseball cap. He was last seen at 5:30 PM yesterday at the Owlhead Rock trailhead, walking toward the fire tower.
Wanted for questioning about stolen fishing gear: a man about 60 with a gray mustache and a tan canvas coat, last seen in a green rowboat near the north cove.
Posts: Officer Deshotel, Car 312, dam road. Officer Amoako, on foot, shore trail.
Question 13 (medium)
Based on the briefing you just studied, where was the missing hiker last seen?
- A. At the Owlhead Rock trailhead
- B. At the fire tower
- C. Near the north cove
- D. On the shore trail
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Owen Kagawa was last seen at the Owlhead Rock trailhead at 5:30 PM. The fire tower is where he was walking to, the north cove is where the man wanted for questioning was seen and the shore trail is Officer Amoako's post.
Question 14 (hard)
Based on the briefing you just studied, which officer is on foot, and at which post?
- A. Officer Deshotel, on the shore trail
- B. Officer Amoako, on the dam road
- C. Officer Amoako, on the shore trail
- D. Officer Deshotel, on the dam road
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The briefing puts Officer Amoako on foot on the shore trail, and Officer Deshotel in Car 312 on the dam road. The other choices mix up the two officers and their posts.
Problem Sensitivity
Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, such as when a person on patrol needs medical help.
Question 15 (easy)
In late November, Officer Curtis Ebersole checks on an angler who slipped into the cold, waist-deep water at the edge of the reservoir about 20 minutes ago and climbed out on his own. The man has put on a dry jacket from his truck and is sitting in the cab with the heater running. He says he is fine and only needs to warm up.
Which detail most clearly suggests that he needs medical help?
- A. His pants and boots are still wet, and he says he will change them when he gets home.
- B. He asks whether he may come back and fish again once he has warmed up in the truck.
- C. He cannot answer simple questions clearly, and his fingers are too stiff to zip his jacket.
- D. His hands are red, and he keeps holding them in front of the heater vent to warm them.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Confused answers and fingers too stiff to work are signs that the cold is affecting his body, even though he says he is fine. Wet pants are expected right after a fall into the water, and asking about fishing again is a normal question. Red hands held up to a heater are a normal part of warming up.
Question 16 (medium)
On a dry, calm morning, Officer Bettina Cloutier walks the shore trail beside Sparrow Run, a stream that flows into the reservoir. It has not rained for nine days, and no DEP crews or farms are working upstream this week.
Which detail most clearly shows that something may be wrong?
- A. The stream is lower than it was in the spring, and some rocks along its edge are dry.
- B. A drainage pipe that has been dry all month is running, and the water below it smells of gasoline.
- C. Brown leaves are collecting in a slow pool where the stream bends close to the trail.
- D. A deer is drinking from the stream at a gravel bar about 50 yards upstream of the trail.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. With no rain for nine days and no crews or farms working upstream, nothing normal explains a dry pipe starting to run or a gasoline smell in the water, which points to a spill or dumping. A low stream and dry rocks are expected after nine dry days. Leaves in a slow pool and a deer drinking are ordinary sights on a stream.
Question 17 (hard)
It rained hard from 9:00 PM until 11:00 PM, and the paved lot at the Brackett Point boat launch has no roof and no trees over it. At 11:30 PM, Officer Tunde Oyinlola finds a pickup truck parked in the lot with the engine off and the driver inside. The driver says that he got lost, pulled in about ten minutes ago to check his phone and was just about to leave.
Which detail most clearly conflicts with what the driver says?
- A. The pavement under the truck is dry, while the rest of the lot is wet.
- B. The truck's tires and lower doors are splashed with mud from a dirt road.
- C. A paper road map of the county lies open on the truck's passenger seat.
- D. His phone shows a map app with a route to a town about 30 miles away.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A truck that pulled in ten minutes ago, after the rain stopped, would be sitting on wet pavement. Dry pavement under it means it was parked there while it was still raining, before 11:00 PM. The map app and the paper map fit a lost driver, and mud from a dirt road fits someone driving on wet back roads.
Spatial Orientation
Work out where you are in relation to a place, or where it is in relation to you, such as reading a road map to find the best route to a scene. Our practice uses our own drawn maps.
Question 18 (easy)
Use the map. The gray squares are roads, and north is at the top. Officer Darrell Begaye is finishing a boat check at the Boat Launch when the desk asks him to meet a DEP engineer at the Patrol Office.
In which direction is the Patrol Office from the Boat Launch?
- A. North
- B. Northeast
- C. West
- D. Northwest
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The Patrol Office is in the top row at the far left, and the Boat Launch is in the bottom row near the middle, so the Patrol Office is up and to the left: northwest. It is not level with the Boat Launch, which rules out west, and it lies to the left, not straight up or to the right, which rules out north and northeast.
Question 19 (medium)
Use the map. The gray squares are roads, and the arrows show one-way roads. Officer Delphine Okwuosa is in her patrol car at the Parking Area when the desk says it may send her to one of four places. Driving only on gray road squares and going only the way each arrow points, which of these places can she reach by driving on the fewest road squares? Count every gray square she drives on, from the first one next to the Parking Area to the last one next to the place.
- A. Patrol Office
- B. Gatehouse
- C. Dam
- D. Spillway
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The arrow on the short road between the Fishing Area and the Picnic Area points south, so she cannot drive north there. Her only way north is the road between the Picnic Area and the Spillway. Counted along legal routes, the Spillway is 6 road squares away, the Dam 7, the Gatehouse 8 and the Patrol Office 11. The Patrol Office looks closest, but the arrow blocks the short way to it.
Question 20 (hard)
Use the map. The gray squares are roads, and the arrows show one-way roads. Officer Kenji Hirano is at the Weir when a caller reports a fight in the lot at the Visitor Center. She drives only on gray road squares, goes only the way each arrow points and takes the shortest legal route. Count every gray square on the route, including the first one next to the Weir and the last one next to the Visitor Center.
How many gray squares are on her route?
- A. 4
- B. 9
- C. 8
- D. 10
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The two arrows on the road between the Garage and the Lab point south, so she cannot drive straight north from the Weir. She drives west on the lower road (its arrow points west, her direction), north on the road beside the Boathouse and east on the upper road to the Visitor Center: 9 squares. The answer 4 is the blocked route straight north, and 8 and 10 come from leaving out or adding a square.
Visualization
Picture how something would look after it is moved, turned or unfolded. Our practice uses our own drawn layouts, not pictures of faces.
Question 21 (easy)
Officer Chioma Madueke checks the control room of a gatehouse after a door alarm goes off. The drawing shows the room from above, with north at the top. She comes in through the East Door, so she faces west.
From where she stands, which item is in the far right corner of the room?
- A. First Aid Kit
- B. Radio Desk
- C. Map Table
- D. Valve Panel
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Facing west, her right hand points north, and the far wall is the west wall. The far right corner is therefore the northwest corner, where the Valve Panel is. The First Aid Kit is in her near right corner, the Radio Desk in her far left corner and the Map Table in her near left corner. Picking the First Aid Kit comes from reading the drawing as if she faced north.
Question 22 (medium)
Officer Teodoro Macaraeg carries a tray of six water sample bottles into the patrol office. The drawing shows the tray seen from above. He sets the tray down after giving it a quarter turn clockwise, still seen from above, so that it is now two bottles wide and three bottles long. Then the Spring and Well bottles trade places.
Seen from above now, where is the Spring bottle?
- A. Middle left
- B. Bottom right
- C. Middle right
- D. Top left
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A quarter turn clockwise turns the top row (Inlet, Brook, Spring) into the right column, top to bottom, which puts Spring at the bottom right, and it moves Well from the bottom middle to the middle left. When the two bottles trade places, Spring ends up at the middle left. Bottom right forgets the trade, middle right comes from turning the tray counterclockwise and top left comes from turning it counterclockwise and forgetting the trade.
Question 23 (hard)
The drawing marked Original shows a DEP pump room from above. Officer Mercedes Soriano must pick the plan that shows the same room only turned, with nothing moved and nothing flipped. Each of the other plans shows the room as a mirror image or with two items traded.
Which plan shows the same room, only turned?
- A. Plan A
- B. Plan B
- C. Plan C
- D. Plan D
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Turning the Original a quarter turn counterclockwise puts the Hose Reel at the top left, the Bench at the top right, the Pump standing upright in the middle column at the top, the Panel and the Drain at the left and right of the third row and the Generator lying along the bottom. That matches Plan C. Plan A is the same turned room flipped top to bottom, a mirror image. Plan B is a half turn with the Panel and the Drain traded, and Plan D is a quarter turn clockwise with the Hose Reel and the Bench traded.
Written Comprehension
Understand written sentences and paragraphs, such as an incident report or a department memo.
Question 24 (easy)
Read the made-up incident report, then answer the question.
On July 9 at 4:25 PM, Officer Benedikt Haraldsen saw three teenagers swimming in the pool below the Grayling Dam spillway, where signs ban swimming. He called them out of the water. One of them, Kayla Gagnon, 15, had a deep cut on her left foot from a rock. Officer Haraldsen cleaned and bandaged the cut, and at 4:32 PM he radioed for an ambulance because the bleeding did not stop. A parent arrived at 4:50 PM and drove the other two teenagers home. The ambulance took Kayla to Hillvale Hospital at 5:05 PM. Officer Haraldsen did not write summonses, because the district guideline sends people under 16 to a youth officer instead.
According to the report, why did Officer Haraldsen radio for an ambulance?
- A. Kayla was under 16, and the district guideline required an ambulance.
- B. The bleeding from the cut on Kayla's foot did not stop after he bandaged it.
- C. A parent asked him to call one when she arrived at the spillway pool.
- D. Kayla could not walk out of the water on her own after she was cut.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The report says he radioed at 4:32 PM because the bleeding did not stop. Being under 16 is the reason he wrote no summonses, not the reason for the ambulance. The parent arrived at 4:50 PM, after the call, and the report never says that Kayla could not walk.
Question 25 (medium)
Read the made-up district memo, then answer the question.
To all North District officers: Starting May 1, the Ambervale boat launch opens at 6:00 AM on weekdays instead of 5:00 AM. Weekend hours do not change and remain 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and the weekday closing time also stays at 8:00 PM. Boaters who arrive before opening must wait in the upper lot, not on the launch ramp. An officer who finds a boat on the water before opening should take the owner's name and permit number and enter them in the shift log. A summons is required only if the same owner is already in the log for an earlier early launch. This memo replaces the memo of March 2.
On a Tuesday in May, Officer Wendell Bramlett finds a man fishing from his boat at 5:30 AM, and the man's name is not in the shift log.
What should Officer Bramlett do under the memo?
- A. Take the man's name and permit number and enter them in the shift log
- B. Write the man a summons for putting his boat in before the launch opened
- C. Take no action, because the launch opens at 5:00 AM for boaters on the water
- D. Tell the man to wait in the upper lot until 6:00 AM, and make no log entry
Show answer
Correct answer: A. On weekdays from May 1 the launch opens at 6:00 AM, so a boat on the water at 5:30 AM on a Tuesday is early. The memo says to take the owner's name and permit number and log them, and a summons is required only for an owner already in the log, which this man is not. The 5:00 AM opening is now for weekends only, and the upper lot rule is for boaters waiting on land, not a reason to skip the log entry.
Question 26 (hard)
Read the made-up incident report, then answer the question.
On September 18 at 7:10 AM, angler Desmond Whitehorse told Officer Lucia Delvecchio that the water near the north culvert at Glenmarrow Reservoir smelled like paint. Officer Delvecchio reached the culvert at 7:25 AM and saw a milky white stream flowing from the pipe. She radioed the desk at 7:28 AM. Water quality technician Rhea Kalnins arrived at 8:05 AM, took samples and traced the pipe to a storm drain on Fenmore Road. At 8:40 AM, Officer Delvecchio found a work crew rinsing paint rollers into a curb drain on Fenmore Road. The crew's foreman, Arturo Lacson, said the crew had started work at 6:30 AM and did not know that the drain led to the reservoir. Officer Delvecchio told the crew to stop and wrote down the company's name.
Based on the report, which statement is correct?
- A. Officer Delvecchio saw the milky stream before the angler told her about the smell.
- B. The technician traced the pipe before Officer Delvecchio radioed the desk at 7:28 AM.
- C. Officer Delvecchio found the crew rinsing paint rollers at the north culvert.
- D. The crew started work before the angler told Officer Delvecchio about the smell.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The foreman said the crew started at 6:30 AM, and the angler spoke to Officer Delvecchio at 7:10 AM, so the work started first. She saw the milky stream at 7:25 AM, after the angler's report. The technician arrived at 8:05 AM, after the 7:28 AM radio call, and the crew was at a curb drain on Fenmore Road, not at the culvert.

Question 27 (easy)

Which sentence is the most complete, clear and correct for the incident report?
- A. At 2:15 PM, an unleashed black dog bit hiker Natalie Quarshie on her right ankle on the Birchmont Trail.
- B. At 2:15 PM, hiker Natalie Quarshie reported that an unleashed black dog bit her right ankle.
- C. At 2:15 PM, hiker Natalie Quarshie reported that an unleashed black dog bit her right ankle on the Birchmont Trail.
- D. At 2:15 PM, hiker Natalie Quarshie reported a dog bite, an unleashed black dog bit her right ankle on the Birchmont Trail.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The third sentence gives the time, the person, what happened and the place, and it credits the bite to Ms. Quarshie's report, since the officer did not see it. The first states the bite as a fact the officer did not see. The second leaves out the trail, and the fourth joins two full sentences with only a comma.
Question 28 (medium)
Officer Celeste Duquesne's facts: At 6:50 AM, she found a red canoe floating upside down near the spillway. She saw no one in the water. She then pulled the canoe to shore with a pole.
Which sentence is the most complete, clear and correct for her memo book?
- A. Floating upside down near the spillway, I found a red canoe at 6:50 AM, saw no one in the water and pulled it to shore with a pole.
- B. At 6:50 AM, I found a red canoe floating upside down near the spillway, saw no one in the water and pulled the canoe to shore with a pole.
- C. At 6:50 AM, I found a red canoe floating upside down near the spillway, no one was in the water, I pulled it to shore with a pole.
- D. At 6:50 AM, I pulled a red canoe to shore with a pole, and then I found it floating upside down near the spillway and saw no one in the water.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The second sentence gives every fact in the order it happened, in one clear sentence. The first opens with a phrase that makes it sound as if the officer was floating upside down. The third strings three full sentences together with commas, and the fourth puts pulling the canoe to shore before finding it.
Question 29 (hard)
Officer Rafael Pangilinan's facts: At 11:05 AM in the boat launch parking area, he saw visitor Gregory Boudreaux back a pickup truck into a parked car owned by visitor Marcus Kekumu. Mr. Kekumu was standing beside his car and was not hurt. Mr. Boudreaux then gave Officer Pangilinan his driver license.
Which entry is the most complete, clear and correct for the incident report?
- A. At 11:05 AM in the boat launch parking area, I saw visitor Gregory Boudreaux back a pickup truck into the parked car of visitor Marcus Kekumu. He was standing beside the car and was not hurt, and he then gave me his driver license.
- B. In the boat launch parking area, I saw visitor Gregory Boudreaux back a pickup truck into the parked car of visitor Marcus Kekumu, who was standing beside the car and was not hurt. Mr. Boudreaux then gave me his driver license.
- C. At 11:05 AM in the boat launch parking area, I saw visitor Gregory Boudreaux back a pickup truck into the parked car of visitor Marcus Kekumu, who was standing beside the car and was not hurt, Mr. Boudreaux then gave me his driver license.
- D. At 11:05 AM in the boat launch parking area, I saw visitor Gregory Boudreaux back a pickup truck into the parked car of visitor Marcus Kekumu, who was standing beside the car and was not hurt. Mr. Boudreaux then gave me his driver license.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The fourth entry has the time, the place and both people, and it makes clear that Mr. Kekumu was beside the car and Mr. Boudreaux gave the license. In the first, each "he" could mean either man. The second leaves out the time, and the third joins two full sentences with only a comma before "Mr. Boudreaux."
Question 30 (medium)
Officer Ingrid Gatlin's facts: At 9:40 AM, DEP worker Lionel Adjei told her that at about 9:15 AM he saw a man in an orange vest dump a bucket of white powder into Cobble Run from the Rookfield Road bridge. At 9:50 AM, she went to the bridge and saw white streaks on the bank below it. She did not see the man.
Which memo book entry is the most complete, clear and correct?
- A. At 9:40 AM, DEP worker Lionel Adjei reported that at about 9:15 AM he saw a man in an orange vest dump a bucket of white powder into Cobble Run from the Rookfield Road bridge. At 9:50 AM, I saw white streaks on the bank below the bridge.
- B. At about 9:15 AM, a man in an orange vest dumped a bucket of white powder into Cobble Run from the Rookfield Road bridge. At 9:50 AM, I saw white streaks on the bank below the bridge.
- C. At 9:40 AM, DEP worker Lionel Adjei reported that he saw a man in an orange vest dump a bucket of white powder into Cobble Run. At 9:50 AM, I saw white streaks on the bank below the bridge.
- D. At 9:50 AM, I saw white streaks on the bank below the Rookfield Road bridge. At 9:40 AM, DEP worker Lionel Adjei reported that at about 9:15 AM he saw a man in an orange vest dump a bucket of white powder into Cobble Run from the bridge.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The first entry credits the dumping to Mr. Adjei, gives every time and place, and keeps the events in order. The second states the dumping as a fact the officer did not see. The third leaves out when and where the man was seen, so "the bridge" is unclear, and the fourth puts the 9:50 AM visit before the 9:40 AM report.
What these questions are, and are not
The official notice lists the abilities the test may cover. It does not publish the number of questions, the time limit or how many questions cover each ability, and it does not publish sample questions. These questions practice the listed abilities in watershed patrol settings (reservoirs, dams, gatehouses, shore trails and access roads), with made-up names, places and rules. They are not copies of the real test, and the real test may look different.
Frequently asked questions
What is on the Environmental Police Officer test?
A multiple-choice test taken at a computer. The latest notice, Exam 6305, says it may include questions on nine abilities: Deductive Reasoning, Inductive Reasoning, Information Ordering, Memorization, Problem Sensitivity, Spatial Orientation, Visualization, Written Comprehension and Written Expression. Calculators are not allowed. See the 9 abilities explained.
When is the 2026 Environmental Police Officer exam?
The DCAS annual exam schedule plans Exam 7305 with filing beginning on December 2, 2026, and Exam 7306 with filing beginning on April 7, 2027. The notice for Exam 7305 is not posted yet, so its end date, fee and test date are not known. Details are in how the exam works.
Did the test change from the 2024 and 2025 exams?
Not in its outline. The notices for Exam 5304 (filing from December 10, 2024, to March 10, 2025), Exam 6304 (filing in December 2025) and Exam 6305 (filing in April 2026) all list the same nine abilities and the same 70% pass mark. Other rules did change: Exam 5304 asked for 30 college credits, and the two later notices ask for 24. Always check the notice for the exam you file for.
How many questions are on the real exam, and how long is it?
The notice does not say. It publishes no question count, no time limit and no number of questions per ability, so any number you see elsewhere is a guess.
What score do I need to pass?
70%. Passing puts you on the eligible list, and your score sets your place on it, so a higher score means an earlier call. See what happens after the exam.
Is there a free Environmental Police Officer study guide?
Yes. This page and the other free guides for this exam make up a study guide written from the official notices: how the exam works, requirements, the 9 abilities explained, salary, what the job involves and what happens after the exam.
