The stakes

Your score sets your list number

Everyone who passes is ranked by score, and candidates are considered for hiring in list order. Medical, psychological and background steps come later, but your score decides when you are called. Here is how hiring works:

1

You apply on OASys

File online during the filing period. For Exam 7302 the fee is $0.

2

You take the test

A multiple-choice test on a computer at a DCAS testing center.

3

Your score sets your list number

Pass with 70% or more and you join the eligible list in score order.

4

Calls go in list order

The Department of Correction calls candidates in list order for the medical, psychological and background steps.

A higher score means an earlier call. That's why you practice before test day.

Deductive ReasoningBasic

Dayroom rule, Housing Area 12: The dayroom TV may be on from 9:00 AM to 10:30 PM, except during a formal count and while lunch is served in the dayroom. A formal count lasts until the count clears. Today, lunch was served in the dayroom from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM, and the 12:30 PM formal count cleared at 12:50 PM.

At which of these times may the TV be on?

Deductive ReasoningIntermediate

Recreation rule, Housing Area 14: An inmate may go to the 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM yard period only if he signed the yard list before 7:00 AM, is not confined to his cell by a disciplinary order, and has no clinic appointment during the yard period.

Which inmate may go to the yard today?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do I get for free?

You get free study guides that explain Exam 7302, the requirements and how your list number works, all written from official NYC sources. You also get one free 15-question practice test that mixes every ability, with your score, an ability-by-ability breakdown and every answer explained. Full access adds unlimited 40-question practice sets, tests on one ability at a time, targeted drills on your weakest abilities and a readiness score.

How many questions are on the real exam, and how long is it?

That is not published. The official notice lists the abilities the test may cover, but it gives no question count, no time limit and no weight for each ability. Our practice sets are 40 questions, our own length, with questions spread evenly across the abilities. That spread is our choice, not the City's weighting.

When can I apply for Exam 7302, and what does it cost?

The filing period for Exam 7302 runs from September 2, 2026, to October 27, 2026. You apply online through OASys at www.nyc.gov/examsforjobs, or in person at a DCAS testing center. The application fee is $0: select "No Fee" as your payment method. Testing is expected to begin on Tuesday, December 15, 2026. DCAS also plans two more Correction Officer exams before June 30, 2027 (7303 and 7304).

When is the next NYC Correction Officer exam?

Filing for Exam 7302 is open from September 2 to October 27, 2026. The DCAS exam schedule for the 2027 fiscal year plans two more Correction Officer exams: Exam 7303, with filing planned to start January 6, 2027, and Exam 7304, with filing planned to start April 7, 2027. Each exam gets its own notice, and planned dates can change, so check the notice when it posts.

What score do I need to pass?

You need at least 70% to pass. Passing places you on the eligible list in score order with a list number. Eligible veterans can get 5 extra points (10 for disabled veterans), added only to a passing score and only if claimed before the list is established.

Why does my score matter if I only need 70%?

Because the list is ranked by score, and the list sets the order in which candidates are considered for hiring. A higher score means a lower list number and an earlier call. No official source says what score is high enough to be hired, so the goal is simply the best score you can get.

What happens on test day?

Your Admission Notice appears on your OASys Dashboard 14 days before testing is expected to begin. Bring one valid ID with your photo and signature, with a name that matches your application. Phones, smartwatches and other devices are sealed in a pouch until the exam is over. A basic four-function calculator is allowed. You get immediate, tentative results at the end of the test.

What happens after I pass?

DCAS sends the list to the NYC Department of Correction, which calls candidates to start screening. The Department lists these steps: orientation and a medical exam, a written and oral psychological evaluation, fingerprints and a background check, an investigation, a drug test and a qualifying physical agility test. Candidates who are hired then train at the Academy. The Department says the process can vary.

Who can take the exam?

You must be at least 17 by the test date and at least 21 to be appointed. The notice states no maximum age. By appointment, you need one of the education or experience options in the notice, such as 39 college credits, or a high school diploma or equivalent plus 6 months of military service or 1 year of full-time work. You must also be a US citizen and live in New York City or Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland or Putnam County at appointment.

Are these real exam questions?

No. DCAS publishes no sample questions for this exam. All our questions are original practice content written from the official ability definitions. Memory questions hide the study material before you answer, and map questions use drawn floor plans. Visualization questions use drawings of rooms, boards and carts that you picture from another door or after they are turned.
