These 33 practice questions show the kind of questions and explanations you get with PrepRaven. They cover all 11 abilities from the official notice (Exam No. 7302) for the NYC Correction Officer Exam, three for each ability, from easy to hard. Every question is original. None of them is a real exam question.
Deductive Reasoning
Apply a set of general rules to a specific case and pick the logical answer.
Question 1 (easy)
Harbor Facility late tray rule: An inmate who misses the evening meal because he was at court, at the clinic or on a legal visit gets a late tray, as long as the housing area officer orders it from the kitchen by 8:00 PM. An inmate who misses the meal for any other reason does not get a late tray.
At 7:30 PM, Officer Nadia Ruiz is deciding which late trays to order.
Which inmate should get a late tray?
- A. Inmate Baptiste, who was asleep when the trays were served
- B. Inmate Kovac, who was at the clinic for an X-ray during the meal
- C. Inmate Mendez, who was on a family visit with his mother during the meal
- D. Inmate Lowry, who was in the shower when the trays were served
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Kovac missed the meal because he was at the clinic, which is one of the three reasons the rule names, and Officer Ruiz is ordering before the 8:00 PM deadline. Mendez was on a family visit, and the rule covers only a legal visit. Being asleep or in the shower are other reasons, and the rule gives no late tray for them.
Question 2 (medium)
Harbor Facility intake phone rule: Each new admission may make up to two free calls before he leaves intake. A call that is not answered does not count toward the two. A newly admitted person who must arrange care for a child under 18 may make one extra free call. No free call may be made after the admission leaves intake.
Admission Terrell Grant is still in intake and has made three calls: the first was answered, the second was not answered, and the third was answered. He tells Officer Sean Yilmaz that he must arrange for someone to pick up his 9-year-old daughter from school.
What should Officer Yilmaz do?
- A. Deny the call, because Grant has already made three calls.
- B. Deny the call, because Grant has already used his two free calls.
- C. Allow the call once Grant has been moved to his housing area.
- D. Allow one more free call now to arrange care for his daughter.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Only Grant's two answered calls count, which uses up his two regular free calls, but the rule gives one extra free call to an admission who must arrange care for a child under 18. That call must be made now, because no free call may be made after he leaves intake. Denying the call because he made three calls wrongly counts the unanswered one, and denying it because he used two calls overlooks the extra call for child care.
Question 3 (hard)
Harbor Facility visit floor seating rules:
- (1)An inmate with a red ID card must sit at Tables 1 to 4, near the officers' desk.
- (2)A visit that includes a child under 5 years old must use Tables 9 to 12, next to the play area.
- (3)If both rule 1 and rule 2 apply, the visit is held in Booth Room B instead of at a table.
- (4)In all other cases, any open table may be used.
Inmate Julian Petrov has a red ID card. His visitors today are his sister and her daughter, who turns 5 next week.
Where must the visit be held?
- A. In Booth Room B
- B. At one of Tables 1 to 4
- C. At one of Tables 9 to 12
- D. At any open table
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The girl turns 5 next week, which means she is still under 5 today, and Petrov has a red ID card. Both rule 1 and rule 2 apply, and rule 3 sends the visit to Booth Room B. Tables 1 to 4 would follow rule 1 alone, Tables 9 to 12 would follow rule 2 alone, and any open table is only for visits where neither rule applies.
Inductive Reasoning
Combine separate facts or observations to reach a general conclusion.
Question 4 (easy)
Visitors at Harbor Facility say the visitor lobby is cold on Saturday mornings. Officer Tamara Brooks learns these facts: The lobby heat runs on a timer. Last month, the timer was set to run Monday through Friday only. On weekdays, the lobby reads about 70 degrees at 8:00 AM. Last Saturday at 8:00 AM, it read 58 degrees. The lobby doors stay closed between visitor groups.
Which conclusion do these facts best support?
- A. The complaints are likely not valid, because the lobby heat runs on a timer.
- B. The lobby doors are likely being left open between visitor groups.
- C. The timer likely leaves the lobby heat off on Saturdays.
- D. The lobby heat is likely failing every morning of the week.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The timer runs only Monday through Friday, and the lobby read 58 degrees on Saturday but about 70 degrees on weekdays. The 58-degree reading confirms the complaints, and the doors stay closed between groups. The warm weekday readings show that the heat is not failing every morning, which rules out the last option.
Question 5 (medium)
Since Monday, inmates in Housing Area 7 at Harbor Facility say some of their letters are being handed to other inmates. Officer Marcus Bell learns these facts: On Monday morning, 11 inmates in the area moved to new cells. Every misdelivered letter was addressed to one of those 11 inmates and was handed out at his old cell. The mail list used for delivery is printed each Sunday night. Letters for inmates who did not move have all reached the right cells. One officer has delivered the area's mail for the past year.
Which conclusion do these facts best support?
- A. The mail list likely still shows the old cells of the inmates who moved.
- B. A new mail officer likely does not yet know the inmates in the area.
- C. Letters are likely being handed to the wrong cells all over the area.
- D. The complaints are likely not valid, because mail is delivered by a list.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Every misdelivered letter went to the old cell of an inmate who moved on Monday, and the list was printed the night before the moves. The mail officer is not new, since one officer has done the job for a year. Letters for inmates who did not move arrive correctly, and the misdelivered letters confirm the complaints, which rules out the last two options.
Question 6 (hard)
Over the past two weeks, 9 new admissions at Harbor Facility reached their housing areas without a bedding set. Officer Priya Raman learns these facts: Intake hands out a bedding set as the last step before an admission leaves. All 9 admissions left intake between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM. Admissions who left intake at other hours all had bedding sets. Two weeks ago, the bedding supply was moved from an intake shelf to the laundry, which is locked from 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM. Also two weeks ago, a new intake officer started on the day tour, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Intake still receives 40 bedding sets a week, the same number as before.
Which conclusion do these facts best support?
- A. The new day tour intake officer is likely skipping the bedding step.
- B. The facility is likely receiving too few bedding sets each week.
- C. Admissions at every hour are likely leaving intake without bedding sets.
- D. Intake likely cannot get bedding sets while the laundry is locked.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Every admission without bedding left intake between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, the same hours the laundry that now holds the bedding is locked. The new officer's start date fits, but he works the day tour, not those overnight hours. Deliveries are unchanged at 40 a week, and admissions who left at other hours had bedding, which rules out the other two options.
Information Ordering
Follow a given rule or set of steps in the correct order.
Question 7 (easy)
Harbor Facility sally gate procedure for an escort:
- (1)Radio the control room with the number of inmates in the group.
- (2)Walk the group through the first gate.
- (3)Count the group again inside the sally area.
- (4)Wait until the first gate has fully closed.
- (5)Ask the control room to open the second gate.
Officer Jasmine Ortiz has radioed the control room and walked her group of 6 inmates through the first gate.
What should she do next?
- A. Count the group again inside the sally area.
- B. Ask the control room to open the second gate.
- C. Wait until the first gate has fully closed.
- D. Radio the control room with the number of inmates.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Officer Ortiz has finished steps 1 and 2, and step 3 is to count the group again inside the sally area. Waiting for the first gate to close is step 4, and asking for the second gate is step 5, which both come after the count. She already radioed the control room in step 1.
Question 8 (medium)
Harbor Facility shift change rules for a housing area post: The incoming officer tests his radio before doing anything else. The two officers count the inmates together after the radio test. The post keys are handed over only after the count matches the count sheet. The outgoing officer signs out in the logbook only after he hands over the keys. The incoming officer must read the previous tour's logbook entries after the radio test and before the keys are handed over.
Which order follows all of these rules?
- A. Radio test, logbook reading, keys handed over, count, sign-out
- B. Logbook reading, radio test, count, keys handed over, sign-out
- C. Radio test, count, logbook reading, keys handed over, sign-out
- D. Radio test, count, keys handed over, sign-out, logbook reading
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The keyed order tests the radio first, counts next, reads the logbook before the keys change hands, and ends with the sign-out. Of the other orders, one hands over the keys before the count, one reads the logbook before the radio test, and one reads the logbook after the keys are handed over. Each of those breaks one stated rule.
Question 9 (hard)
Harbor Facility visit lobby call order:
- (1)Visitors with a legal visit are called first, in order of sign-in time.
- (2)Next come visitors with a child under 2, in order of sign-in time.
- (3)All other visitors are called in order of sign-in time, except that visitors for the same inmate are called together, at the time the first of them would be called.
This morning's sign-ins: Ms. Alvarez, 8:05 AM, to see inmate Sloane; Mr. Chen, 8:12 AM, for a legal visit with inmate Diaz; Ms. Pham, 8:15 AM, to see inmate Ford; Ms. Okoro, with her 10-month-old son, 8:20 AM, to see inmate Lyle; Mr. Boateng, 8:31 AM, to see inmate Sloane.
In what order are they called?
- A. Chen, Okoro, Alvarez, Pham, Boateng
- B. Chen, Okoro, Alvarez with Boateng, Pham
- C. Alvarez with Boateng, Chen, Pham, Okoro
- D. Chen, Alvarez with Boateng, Okoro, Pham
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Mr. Chen has the only legal visit and goes first, and Ms. Okoro's son is under 2, which puts her second. Ms. Alvarez signed in earliest of the others, and Mr. Boateng is there for the same inmate, Sloane, which means he is called with her, ahead of Ms. Pham. The other orders leave Boateng in his own sign-in place, use sign-in time alone, or skip the rule for a child under 2.
Mathematical Reasoning
Set up a word problem and choose the right math method to solve it.
Question 10 (easy)
On Saturday, the Harbor Facility visit floor held 2 morning sessions with 36 and 41 visitors and 2 afternoon sessions with 29 and 38 visitors. Officer Aaliyah Simmons must report the average number of visitors per session for the day.
Which calculation gives that average?
- A. (36 + 41 + 29 + 38) ÷ 2
- B. (36 + 41 + 29 + 38) ÷ 4
- C. (41 + 29) ÷ 2
- D. 36 + 41 + 29 + 38
Show answer
Correct answer: B. An average per session is the total number of visitors divided by the number of sessions, and there were 4 sessions: 144 ÷ 4 = 36 visitors. Dividing by 2 treats the morning and the afternoon as the sessions. (41 + 29) ÷ 2 averages only the highest and lowest sessions, and the plain sum is the day's total, not an average.
Question 11 (medium)
The Harbor Facility visit floor must have at least 1 officer for every 12 people on the floor, counting both inmates and visitors. For the 10:00 AM session, 31 inmates will have 46 visitors.
What is the fewest number of officers that must be on the floor?
- A. 3
- B. 4
- C. 6
- D. 7
Show answer
Correct answer: D. There will be 31 + 46 = 77 people on the floor, and 77 ÷ 12 is about 6.4. Six officers cover only 72 people, which means a seventh officer is needed for the other 5. The answers 3 and 4 count only the inmates or only the visitors, and 6 rounds down instead of up.
Question 12 (hard)
At 11:00 PM, 14 admissions are waiting in Harbor Facility intake. From 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM, new admissions will keep arriving at a steady 6 per hour, and then no more will arrive. Intake processes 8 admissions per hour without a break.
At what time will no admissions be waiting?
- A. 1:45 AM
- B. 3:00 AM
- C. 3:45 AM
- D. 6:00 AM
Show answer
Correct answer: C. In the 4 hours from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM, intake processes 32 admissions while 24 arrive, which leaves 14 + 24 minus 32 = 6 waiting at 3:00 AM. Those 6 take 45 minutes at 8 per hour, and intake is clear at 3:45 AM. The time 1:45 AM ignores the new arrivals, 3:00 AM assumes the line is gone when arrivals stop, and 6:00 AM treats the arrivals as if they never stop.
Memorization

Show the notice: Housing Area 9 shift change notice (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)
Shift change, Housing Area 9, Friday, 3:00 PM. Officer Rosa Delgado relieves Officer Kevin Marsh. Count: 46 inmates in the area, 2 at the clinic and 1 at court.
Inmate Tyrone Webb moves from Cell 14 to Cell 22 at 4:30 PM. Inmate Samuel Ortiz gets a no-pork dinner tray with a blue label. The east shower is out of order until Monday; use the west shower.
Visits for this area begin at 6:00 PM on Visit Floor B.
Question 13 (easy)
Based on the notice you just studied, which cell is inmate Webb moving to?
- A. Cell 14
- B. Cell 9
- C. Cell 22
- D. Cell 46
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The notice moves Webb from Cell 14 to Cell 22 at 4:30 PM. Cell 14 is the cell he is leaving. The number 9 is the housing area, and 46 is the number of inmates in the area at the count.
Question 14 (medium)
Based on the notice you just studied, which shower should inmates use, and until when?
- A. The east shower, until Monday
- B. The west shower, until Monday
- C. The west shower, until Friday
- D. The east shower, until Friday
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The east shower is out of order until Monday, and the notice says to use the west shower. The east shower is the broken one. Friday is the day of the shift change, not the day the shower will be fixed.
Show the notice: Intake summary, Tuesday night tour (study it for 60 seconds, then close it)
Intake summary, Harbor Facility, Tuesday night tour.
10:40 PM: Bus 7 arrived from North Court with 9 admissions. 11:55 PM: Bus 3 arrived from Harbor Court with 6 admissions.
Admission Felix Moran uses a cane and was sent to Housing Area 12, Cell 3. Admission Omar Haddad needs a halal diet; the kitchen was told at 12:20 AM. Two admissions from Bus 3 went to the clinic for a medical check.
Officer Nia Okonjo takes the 6:00 AM count sheet to the control room.
Question 15 (hard)
Based on the notice you just studied, which bus arrived at 11:55 PM, and how many admissions did it bring?
- A. Bus 3, with 6 admissions
- B. Bus 7, with 9 admissions
- C. Bus 3, with 9 admissions
- D. Bus 7, with 6 admissions
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Bus 3 arrived from Harbor Court at 11:55 PM with 6 admissions. Bus 7, with 9 admissions, was the earlier bus, which came from North Court at 10:40 PM. The other two options mix the bus number of one arrival with the admission count of the other.
Number Facility
Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and correctly.
Question 16 (easy)
Harbor Facility intake started the night tour with 250 ID wristbands. Admissions from three court buses used 38, 27 and 46 wristbands, and 5 more wristbands were spoiled by printer errors.
How many wristbands are left?
- A. 134
- B. 139
- C. 144
- D. 161
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The buses used 38 + 27 + 46 = 111 wristbands, and 5 were spoiled, for 116 in all. 250 minus 116 leaves 134. The answer 139 forgets the spoiled wristbands, 144 adds them back instead of taking them away, and 161 skips the second bus.
Question 17 (medium)
During Saturday visits, visitors at the Harbor Facility lobby window deposited these amounts into inmate accounts: $45.00, $120.00, $37.50, $60.25 and $18.75. The $37.50 deposit was later returned to the visitor because of a wrong account number.
What total stayed in inmate accounts?
- A. $206.50
- B. $244.00
- C. $281.50
- D. $319.00
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The five deposits total $45.00 + $120.00 + $37.50 + $60.25 + $18.75 = $281.50. Taking away the returned $37.50 leaves $244.00. $281.50 forgets the return, $319.00 adds the $37.50 a second time, and $206.50 subtracts it twice.
Question 18 (hard)
Officer Imani Clarke logs the time she spent on escorts during her tour: 1 hour 25 minutes, 50 minutes, 2 hours 10 minutes, 35 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes. What is her total escort time?
- A. 5 hours 45 minutes
- B. 6 hours 5 minutes
- C. 6 hours 45 minutes
- D. 7 hours 45 minutes
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The whole hours add to 1 + 2 + 1 = 4, and the minutes add to 25 + 50 + 10 + 35 + 45 = 165. Since 165 minutes is 2 hours 45 minutes, the total is 6 hours 45 minutes. 6 hours 5 minutes comes from adding the times as decimals (1.25 + 0.50 + 2.10 + 0.35 + 1.45 = 5.65) and reading that as 5 hours 65 minutes, 5 hours 45 minutes carries only 1 hour from the minutes, and 7 hours 45 minutes carries 3.
Problem Sensitivity
Notice when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
Question 19 (easy)
While escorting 5 inmates from the Harbor Facility gym back to Housing Area 2, Officer Lena Fischer notices four things. Which one most clearly needs action right away?
- A. Two inmates at the front of the group are talking about a basketball game.
- B. An inmate asks her what time dinner will be served tonight.
- C. A porter is mopping the hallway ahead and has put out a wet floor sign.
- D. The last inmate has stopped at a side door, out of her sight.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. An inmate who has stopped at a side door, out of the escort officer's sight, is no longer under her control and could leave the group or meet someone. The wet floor already has a sign, which means the hazard is marked, and the group can walk past it with care. Talking about a game and asking about dinner are ordinary and need no action.
Question 20 (medium)
At the 3:00 PM shift change, Officer Ahmed Rahman reads the Housing Area 6 movement log. The receiving post confirms each arrival by radio, and every trip listed takes less than 10 minutes.
Which entry most clearly needs to be checked right away?
- A. 1:05 PM, inmate Soto to the law library; 1:12 PM, library confirms arrival.
- B. 1:30 PM, inmate Brandt to the clinic; no arrival confirmation logged.
- C. 2:10 PM, inmate Okafor to the visit floor; 2:16 PM, arrival confirmed; 2:58 PM, back in the area.
- D. 2:54 PM, inmate Lugo to the barbershop; no arrival confirmation logged.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Brandt left for the clinic 90 minutes ago on a trip of less than 10 minutes, and no arrival was ever confirmed, which means nobody can say where he is. Lugo left only 6 minutes before the shift change and may still be on his way. Soto's and Okafor's trips were confirmed, and Okafor is already back in the area.
Question 21 (hard)
Harbor Facility count rule: A formal count starts at 11:00 AM, and no inmate may move between locations until the count clears, which usually happens by 11:30 AM. An inmate who is away from his housing area at 11:00 AM is counted where he is.
Officer Diana Ellis is planning Sunday morning movement for Housing Area 11.
Which planned entry is most likely to break the count rule?
- A. 9:45 AM: inmate Whitley to the law library; he stays there until 1:00 PM.
- B. 10:00 AM: 6 inmates to the gym; all back in the area by 10:45 AM.
- C. 10:35 AM: inmate Pace to the clinic for an X-ray at 10:40 AM, expected to take about 30 minutes; return when done.
- D. 11:40 AM: 2 inmate workers to the kitchen to help load the lunch carts.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Pace's X-ray starts at 10:40 AM and takes about 30 minutes, which means he would be walked back at about 11:10 AM, while the count is under way. Whitley is in the law library from before 11:00 AM until well after the count and is simply counted there. The gym group is back by 10:45 AM, and the kitchen workers move at 11:40 AM, after the count has usually cleared.
Spatial Orientation
Work out where you are in relation to an object, or where it is in relation to you, such as on a map.
Question 22 (easy)
Use the map. Officer Lucas Moreno is at the Clinic with a new admission who must go back to Intake to finish processing. In which direction is Intake from the Clinic?
- A. Northwest
- B. Northeast
- C. West
- D. Southwest
Show answer
Correct answer: A. North is at the top of the map. Intake is in the top row, at the left, and the Clinic is two rows lower and to the right, which puts Intake up and to the left: northwest. Intake is not level with the Clinic, which rules out plain west, and it is north of the Clinic, not south, while northeast would place it to the right.
Question 23 (medium)
Use the map. Officer Andre Fontaine is in Intake and must drop off a property form at one of four rooms.
Moving only along gray hallway squares and obeying the one-way arrows, which room can he reach by walking on the fewest hallway squares?
- A. Housing Area 2
- B. Roll Call Room
- C. Mailroom
- D. Gym
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The arrow on the west hallway, beside Housing Area 1, points north, which means he cannot walk south down that hallway from the top hallway. He must go east along the top hallway and down past the Clinic: 7 squares to the Roll Call Room, 8 to the Mailroom and 9 to the Gym. Housing Area 2 looks closest, but the only way there is around the east side, which takes 11 squares.
Question 24 (hard)
Use the map. At shift change, Officer Gloria Esposito leaves the Roll Call Room to relieve the officer at the Visitor Lobby. Moving only along gray hallway squares and obeying the one-way arrows, how many hallway squares does she walk on along the shortest route? Count every hallway square on the route, including the first one next to the Roll Call Room and the last one next to the Visitor Lobby.
- A. 3
- B. 9
- C. 10
- D. 11
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The arrow on the hallway square beside the Clinic points south, which means she cannot walk straight north from the Roll Call Room. She walks 5 squares west along the lower hallway, 1 square north past the arrow beside Housing Area 1, and 5 squares east along the top hallway, 11 in all. The answer 3 is the straight route north that the arrow does not allow, and 9 and 10 leave squares out of the count.
Visualization
Picture how something would look after it is moved or its parts are rearranged, such as a room seen from a different door.
Question 25 (easy)
Officer Aisha Rahman reports to the sally port to meet a transport van. The drawing shows the sally port from above, with north at the top. She steps in through the South Door, so she faces north.
From where she stands, which item is in the near left corner?
- A. Lockers
- B. Radio Charger
- C. Cone Rack
- D. Booth
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Coming in through the South Door, she faces north, the same way the drawing is printed, so her left is west. The near left corner is on the door's side of the room and to the west, which is the southwest corner, where the Cone Rack is. The Lockers are in the far left corner, the Radio Charger is in the far right corner, and the Booth is in the near right corner, which is the answer if left and right are mixed up.
Question 26 (medium)
While he cleans the ID card printer at the lobby badge desk, Officer Victor Delgado takes out its supply tray. The drawing shows the tray from above, with the front of the tray at the bottom. He first swaps the Ribbon and the Sleeves. Then he turns the tray a quarter turn counterclockwise and sets it down on the counter, so that the front of the tray is now on the right.
Where are the Sleeves now, as seen from above?
- A. Middle left
- B. Middle right
- C. Bottom right
- D. Top left
Show answer
Correct answer: A. After the swap, the Sleeves are in the top middle compartment, where the Ribbon was. A quarter turn counterclockwise moves the top edge of the tray to the left side, so the top middle compartment moves to the middle left. Middle right is the answer if the tray is turned clockwise instead. Bottom right comes from forgetting the swap, and Top left comes from forgetting the swap and also turning clockwise.
Question 27 (hard)
Compare the Original drawing of the Housing Area 6 dayroom with Plans A through D. Exactly one plan shows the same dayroom rotated, with every item in its place. Each other plan shows a mirror image or has two items swapped.
Which plan is it?
- A. Plan A
- B. Plan B
- C. Plan C
- D. Plan D
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Turning the original a quarter turn clockwise puts the Bookcase at the top left, the TV Stand down the right side at the top, the Kiosk at the bottom left and the Phones at the bottom right, which matches Plan D. Plan B looks the same except that the Phones and the Kiosk have traded places. Plan A is the original flipped left to right, as in a mirror. Plan C is the room turned and then flipped, which puts the TV Stand at the bottom right instead of the top right.
Written Comprehension
Understand written sentences and paragraphs, such as a policy or procedure.
Question 28 (easy)
Harbor Facility memo, Thanksgiving Day meals: On Thanksgiving Day, breakfast will be served at 7:30 AM instead of 6:30 AM. There will be no separate lunch. Instead, a holiday dinner will be served in each housing area from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A light evening meal of sandwiches and fruit will be served at 7:00 PM. Inmates on special diets will receive their usual special-diet trays at every meal. An inmate who is at court or at the clinic during the holiday dinner will receive a holiday tray when he returns. Housing area officers must post this memo in each dayroom by Monday.
According to the memo, which statement is correct?
- A. An inmate at the clinic during the holiday dinner gets a tray when he returns.
- B. Lunch will be served at 1:00 PM, and dinner will be served at 7:00 PM.
- C. Inmates on special diets will get the holiday dinner instead of special trays.
- D. Breakfast will be served at 6:30 AM, the same time as on other days.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The memo says that an inmate at court or at the clinic during the holiday dinner receives a holiday tray when he returns. There is no separate lunch, and the meal from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM is the holiday dinner, with only a light meal at 7:00 PM. Special-diet inmates keep their usual special trays, and breakfast moves from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM.
Question 29 (medium)
Harbor Facility directive, escorts between buildings: An officer may escort no more than 10 inmates at one time between buildings. Before leaving, the officer radios the control room with the number of inmates and the destination. If an inmate in the group cannot continue, for example because he becomes ill, the officer stops the whole group and radios for a second officer. The group does not move again until the second officer arrives, and one officer then stays with the inmate who cannot continue. On arrival, the receiving officer counts the group, and both officers sign the movement sheet. No escort between buildings may start during a formal count.
Officer Rafael Ocampo is escorting 9 inmates to the school building. Halfway there, one inmate says he feels faint and cannot keep walking.
According to the directive, what should Officer Ocampo do?
- A. Have the inmate sit and rest, and finish the escort with the other 8 inmates.
- B. Walk the whole group back to the housing area, including the inmate who feels faint.
- C. Radio the control room with the new count of 8 and continue to the school.
- D. Stop the whole group and radio for a second officer before moving again.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The directive says that when an inmate cannot continue, the officer stops the whole group and radios for a second officer, and the group does not move until that officer arrives. Leaving the inmate to rest and finishing the escort, or reporting a new count of 8 and moving on, both move the group before help arrives. Walking everyone back also moves the group, and the inmate has said he cannot keep walking.
Question 30 (hard)
Harbor Facility directive, cell changes: An inmate who wants to move to another cell in his housing area gives a written request to the housing area officer, who forwards it to the area captain by the end of the tour. The captain approves or denies it within 3 days. The captain must deny the request if the inmate has received a disciplinary infraction in the past 30 days, or if the new cell has no lower bunk and the inmate needs one. A request for a medical reason does not wait for the captain: the officer calls the clinic, and if the clinic agrees, the officer may make the move at once and tell the captain afterward. No cell change may be made during a formal count (6:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 4:00 PM and 8:30 PM) or after 9:00 PM.
Which of these cell changes does the directive allow?
- A. At 9:30 PM, with the clinic's agreement, an officer moves an inmate for a medical reason and tells the captain.
- B. An officer approves a request himself, without the captain, because the inmate has had no infractions this year.
- C. At 2:00 PM, with the clinic's agreement, an officer moves an inmate for a medical reason and tells the captain.
- D. The captain approves a request from an inmate whose last infraction was 3 weeks ago, because the new cell has a lower bunk.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. A medical move may be made at once when the clinic agrees, with the captain told afterward, and 2:00 PM is neither a count time nor after 9:00 PM. The same move at 9:30 PM breaks the 9:00 PM limit. Only the captain approves other requests, and an infraction 3 weeks ago falls within the 30 days that require a denial, whatever the bunk.

Question 31 (easy)
Officer Hannah Cole's facts: at 11:20 AM, visitor Dana Whitfield left the Harbor Facility visit floor because her bus was leaving. Her visit with inmate Raymond Ellis ended 25 minutes early.
Which logbook entry is the clearest and most accurate?
- A. 11:20 AM: Visitor Dana Whitfield left the visit floor because her bus was leaving, her visit with inmate Raymond Ellis ended 25 minutes early.
- B. 11:20 AM: Visitor Dana Whitfield left the visit floor because her bus was leaving. Her visit with inmate Raymond Ellis ended 25 minutes early.
- C. Visitor Dana Whitfield left the visit floor because her bus was leaving. Her visit with inmate Raymond Ellis ended 25 minutes early.
- D. 11:20 AM: Visitor Dana Whitfield left the visit floor after an argument with inmate Raymond Ellis. Her visit ended 25 minutes early.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The keyed entry gives the time, both names, the reason and how early the visit ended, in two complete sentences. One option joins two sentences with only a comma, and one leaves out the time. The last option gives a reason, an argument, that the facts do not show.
Question 32 (medium)
Officer Juan Castro's facts: at 12:05 PM, the lunch cart for Housing Area 8 arrived with 46 trays, but the count sheet showed 49 inmates in the area. At 12:10 PM, he called the kitchen for 3 more trays, and they arrived at 12:30 PM.
Which logbook entry is the clearest and most accurate?
- A. 12:05 PM: Lunch cart arrived with 46 trays; 49 inmates in the area. 12:10 PM: Called the kitchen for 3 more trays. 12:30 PM: 3 trays arrived.
- B. 12:05 PM: Lunch cart arrived with 49 trays; 46 inmates in the area. 12:10 PM: Called the kitchen for 3 more trays. 12:30 PM: 3 trays arrived.
- C. 12:05 PM: Lunch cart arrived with 46 trays; 49 inmates in the area. Called the kitchen for 3 more trays. 12:30 PM: 3 trays arrived.
- D. 12:05 PM: Lunch cart arrived short. 12:10 PM: Called the kitchen. 12:30 PM: The rest of the trays arrived.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The keyed entry records every time and the exact numbers: 46 trays, 49 inmates and 3 more trays. One option swaps the tray count and the inmate count, which would make the call for more trays make no sense. One leaves out the 12:10 PM time of the call, and one replaces the numbers with vague words such as "short" and "the rest."
Question 33 (hard)
Officer Keisha Monroe's facts: at 4:40 PM, while escorting inmates Luis Ferrer and Andre Pike back from the gym, she saw Ferrer hand a note to Pike. She took the note from Pike. It listed two phone numbers. At 4:55 PM, she gave the note to Captain Elena Ward.
Which version for her report is the clearest and most accurate?
- A. At 4:40 PM, while escorting inmates Luis Ferrer and Andre Pike back from the gym, I saw Ferrer hand a note to Pike. I took it from him. It listed two phone numbers. At 4:55 PM, I gave it to Captain Elena Ward.
- B. At 4:40 PM, while escorting inmates Luis Ferrer and Andre Pike back from the gym, I saw Pike hand a note to Ferrer. I took the note from Pike. It listed two phone numbers. At 4:55 PM, I gave the note to Captain Elena Ward.
- C. At 4:40 PM, while escorting inmates Luis Ferrer and Andre Pike back from the gym, I saw Ferrer secretly pass a note to Pike. I took the note from Pike. It listed two phone numbers. At 4:55 PM, I gave the note to Captain Elena Ward.
- D. At 4:40 PM, while escorting inmates Luis Ferrer and Andre Pike back from the gym, I saw Ferrer hand a note to Pike. I took the note from Pike. It listed two phone numbers. At 4:55 PM, I gave the note to Captain Elena Ward.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The keyed version says who handed the note to whom, whom it was taken from, what it said and when it went to the captain. One version says "I took it from him," which could mean either inmate, and one reverses who handed the note to whom. The third adds "secretly," a judgment the facts do not support.
