Readiness: getting closeThe exam is a step you must pass
Unless you are a New York attorney or a qualifying court clerk, you must pass the NY notary exam before you can apply for a commission. Here is how it works:
You study the booklet
The exam covers the free Notary Public License Law booklet from the Department of State (September 2026 edition).
You take the exam
Walk in at a DOS site, or schedule by email in New York City. $15, 1 hour, multiple choice on paper.
You apply online
Get your oath of office notarized, then apply in NY Business Express and pay $60 within 2 years of passing.
You receive your commission
It lasts 4 years and covers the whole state. Electronic notary registration is an optional extra step.
The exam is closed book, with one hour. That's why you practice before test day.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get for free?
Free study guides that explain the NY notary exam, the 2026 exam schedule and sites, how to become a notary in NY and how electronic notary registration works, all written from official New York Department of State sources, plus a free practice test with explanations. Our full practice tests for all 8 sections are coming soon. The official Notary Public License Law booklet is free on the DOS website.
Can you take the NY notary exam online?
No. No DOS source offers an online, at-home or vendor-run notary exam. It is a paper exam at a DOS site: walk-in at sites outside New York City, and by email request in New York City since September 2026. Only the application after you pass is online.
How many questions are on the notary public exam in NY, and what is the pass mark?
DOS does not publish either. Its notices say the exam is multiple choice, you get 1 hour and results are reported only as passed or failed, with no numeric score. One county clerk page (Oneida County) says you must answer at least 70 percent correctly; that is a county statement, not a DOS one. Our practice tests are our own length.
How much does the notary exam in NY cost?
$15 per attempt, by check or money order payable to the Department of State, or MasterCard or Visa. Cash is not accepted, and the fee is nonrefundable. After you pass, the commission application costs $60.
How many times can you take the NY notary exam?
DOS publishes no limit and no waiting period. If you fail, DOS says you may retake the exam on another date and time of your choice, and each attempt costs $15.
Are NY attorneys notaries? Do they take the exam?
Not automatically. Attorneys admitted in New York, and court clerks of the Unified Court System appointed after a court clerk promotional exam, are exempt from the exam, but they still apply through NY Business Express and pay the $60 fee.
How long is a passing result valid?
Two years from the date of the exam. Apply for your commission within that time.
What do I bring to the exam?
A current government-issued photo ID with your signature from the DOS list, the $15 fee and two #2 pencils. Arrive at least 15 minutes early, because late arrivals are not admitted. Books, notes and other reference materials are not allowed, and phones must be off.
Is the exam offered in other languages?
Yes. DOS offers it in Spanish, Haitian-Creole, Italian, Korean, Russian and Chinese. Tell a proctor when you check in.
What happens if I am not satisfied?
Every purchase comes with an unconditional 7-day money-back refund. No conditions, no forms.
