NYC Special Officer Practice Test: 30 Free Questions

Free NYC Special Officer practice test: 30 questions on rules, steps, problem spotting, reading and report writing for Exams 7327 and 7329. Answers explained.

51 min readNYC Special Officer Exam

These 30 practice questions show the kind of questions and explanations you get with PrepRaven. They cover 5 abilities from the official notices: Exam No. 7329 (NYC Health + Hospitals) and Exam No. 7327 (City agencies) for the NYC Special Officer Exam, six for each ability, from easy to hard. Every question is original. None of them is a real exam question.

Both notices list a sixth ability, Time Sharing ("shifting back and forth between two or more sources of information"), but neither describes what those questions look like. We do not invent a format for it, so there are no Time Sharing questions here. Calculators are not allowed on the real test, and none of these questions needs one.

Deductive Reasoning

Apply general rules to a specific case and decide whether an answer makes sense.

Question 1 (easy)

Eastbrook Hospital visitor pass rule: A visitor going to an inpatient floor needs a pass from the lobby desk. The desk officer gives a pass only to a visitor who shows a photo ID and gives the patient's full name. A visitor under 16 gets a pass only when an adult who has a pass is with him or her.

Special Officer Dana Whitfield is working the lobby desk.

Which visitor should she give a pass to?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The woman in B meets both conditions: she shows a photo ID and gives the patient's full name. The man has no photo ID with him, and the woman in D cannot give the patient's full name. The 14-year-old has an ID and the name, but a visitor under 16 gets a pass only with an adult who has a pass, and this one came alone.

Question 2 (easy)

Marlow Street Center rule for vandalism on the premises: If the damage is under $250, the officer issues a summons, unless a warrant check shows an open warrant. If the damage is $250 or more, or if the person has an open warrant, the officer arrests the person.

Officer Luis Paredes finds a man spray-painting a lobby wall. The damage is estimated at $180, and a warrant check shows an open warrant.

What should Officer Paredes do?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The rule makes an open warrant a reason to arrest, whatever the amount of damage. A summons is only for damage under $250 when there is no open warrant, so A and C miss the warrant. Having him clean the wall is not one of the actions the rule allows.

Question 3 (medium)

Eastbrook Hospital main entrance rule: Every person who enters through the main entrance walks through the weapons detection scanner. If the scanner alerts, the person removes metal items and walks through again. If it alerts a second time, an officer checks the person with a hand wand. Staff with a valid hospital ID badge use the staff door and are not scanned. Patients who arrive by ambulance come in through the ambulance bay and are not scanned.

Which person must be checked with the hand wand?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. Only the visitor in A set off a second alert after removing metal items, which is when the rule calls for the hand wand. The visitor in C passed on her second walk-through. The nurse and the ambulance patient do not go through the scanner at all, so their metal items do not matter under this rule.

Question 4 (medium)

Eastbrook Hospital driveway rule: A private vehicle may stop in the emergency department driveway only to drop off or pick up a patient, and for no more than 10 minutes. Ambulances may stay as long as needed. An officer issues a summons to any private vehicle left in the driveway for more than 10 minutes.

Officer Tomasz Nowak checks the driveway.

Which vehicle should get a summons?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The car in C has been in the driveway for 15 minutes, more than the 10 minutes the rule allows, even though the driver had a good reason to stop. The car in B is still under 10 minutes, and the van in D has just arrived for a pickup. Ambulances may stay as long as needed.

Question 5 (hard)

Eastbrook Hospital found property rule: Property found on hospital grounds is entered in the command log and taken to the Hospital Police office, with these exceptions. Medication goes to the pharmacy. Cash over $100 is counted by two officers at the place it was found, before it is moved. A weapon is not touched; the officer guards it and calls a supervisor.

Officer Aisha Rahman finds a small zippered bag on a cafeteria table. It holds $140 in cash and a bottle of prescription pills.

Which action follows the rule for the cash and the pills?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The cash is over $100, so two officers count it where it was found before it is moved, and medication goes to the pharmacy. A sends the pills to the office. C has her count the cash alone and only after moving it. D sends the cash to the pharmacy, but only the medication goes there.

Question 6 (hard)

Marlow Street Center after-hours rule: After 6:00 PM, only people on the after-hours list may enter. A contractor on the list may enter only while escorted by a City employee who is also on the list. A City employee on the list whose ID card does not work at the reader may enter if the officer confirms the name on the list and sees another photo ID. No one enters after 10:00 PM without a call from the building manager.

At 7:30 PM, which person may Officer Kevin Doyle let in?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The employee in D is on the list, and the rule lets the officer admit her after he confirms her name and sees another photo ID. The contractor in A has no escort with him when he enters. After 6:00 PM the list decides who enters, so a working card does not help the employee in B, and the contractor in C is not on the list. The 10:00 PM rule does not apply at 7:30 PM.

Information Ordering

Follow a given rule or set of steps in the correct order, such as the next step when helping an injured person.

Question 7 (easy)

Eastbrook Hospital procedure when a person falls in a public area:

  1. (1)Make sure the area is safe.
  2. (2)Ask the person whether he or she can hear you.
  3. (3)Radio the emergency department for a medical team.
  4. (4)Keep the person still and stay until the team arrives.
  5. (5)Enter the fall in the command log.

Officer Nowak sees a visitor fall in the lobby. The area is safe, and the visitor answers when Officer Nowak asks if she can hear him.

What should he do next?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. Steps 1 and 2 are done, so Step 3, the radio call for a medical team, comes next. Keeping her still is Step 4, and the log entry is Step 5. Helping her up is not in the procedure, and it goes against keeping her still.

Question 8 (easy)

Lobby visitor cards at Eastbrook Hospital are filed first by floor number, with the lowest floor first, and then by the visitor's last name in alphabetical order. Today's cards are: Lopez, Floor 3; Young, Floor 2; Baker, Floor 3; Adams, Floor 5; Carter, Floor 2.

Which card is filed third?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. Floor 2 comes first: Carter, then Young. Floor 3 is next, and Baker comes before Lopez, so Baker is third. Lopez is fourth. Adams is last because Floor 5 is the highest floor, even though Adams comes first in the alphabet.

Question 9 (medium)

Eastbrook Hospital procedure when the weapons detection scanner alerts on a bag:

  1. (1)Stop the person and keep the bag in view.
  2. (2)Ask the person to open the bag.
  3. (3)Look inside without reaching in.
  4. (4)If you see a weapon, step back, keep everyone away from the bag and radio the supervisor.
  5. (5)If you see no weapon, return the bag and enter the alert in the command log.

The scanner alerts on a visitor's backpack. Officer Rahman stops him and asks him to open it. When he does, she sees a folding knife inside.

What should she do next?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. She saw a weapon in Step 3, so Step 4 applies: step back, keep people away and call the supervisor. Taking the knife out breaks the rule against reaching in. Returning the bag and logging the alert belong to Step 5, which is only for a bag with no weapon.

Question 10 (medium)

Officer Kevin Doyle wrote these sentences for an incident report, but they are out of order.

1. I radioed for a medical team.

2. At 2:10 PM, I heard a loud crash in the second-floor waiting room.

3. The medical team arrived at 2:14 PM and took the man to the emergency department.

4. I found a man on the floor next to a broken chair, holding his left arm.

5. I entered the incident in the command log.

Which order is the most logical?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. He first heard the crash (2) and then found the man (4). After that he radioed for help (1). The team came (3), and he logged the incident last (5). A has him radio before he found anyone, C puts the crash after he found the man, and D has the team arriving before he called it.

Question 11 (hard)

Eastbrook Hospital fire alarm procedure for the lobby officer:

  1. (1)Note the time and the alarm location shown on the fire panel.
  2. (2)If the alarm is on the lobby floor, move visitors out through the nearest exit away from the alarm. If it is on another floor, keep visitors in the lobby and stop elevator use.
  3. (3)Radio the alarm location to the command desk.
  4. (4)Keep the main entrance clear for the Fire Department.
  5. (5)Enter the alarm in the command log after it ends.

At 4:05 PM, the panel shows an alarm in the gift shop on the lobby floor.

Which list puts Officer Whitfield's actions in the correct order?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The alarm is on the lobby floor, so Step 2 means moving visitors out, and then the radio call, the clear entrance and the log entry follow in that order. B uses the steps for an alarm on another floor. A makes the radio call before moving visitors, and D leaves the radio call until after the log entry.

Question 12 (hard)

Eastbrook Hospital procedure for a person who seems to have collapsed:

  1. (1)Check that the area is safe.
  2. (2)Tap the person and ask loudly if he is all right.
  3. (3)If he does not respond, radio for the emergency medical team, then check his breathing.
  4. (4)If he is not breathing, start CPR and continue until the medical team takes over. If he is breathing, turn him on his side and stay with him.
  5. (5)Write an incident report.

In a garage stairwell, Officer Rosa Delgado finds a man who does not respond. She radios for the team and sees that he is breathing, so she turns him on his side. Two minutes later, before the team arrives, he stops breathing.

What should she do next?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. Step 4 says to start CPR when the person is not breathing, and his condition has changed to that. Keeping him on his side was right only while he was breathing. The team has already been called, and the report is the last step, after the emergency is over.

Problem Sensitivity

Notice when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, and see the whole problem.

Question 13 (easy)

While patrolling the main lobby of Eastbrook Hospital, Officer Paredes notices four things. Which one most clearly suggests that something is wrong?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. A man who stops, holds his chest and leans on the wall may need medical help right away, so Officer Paredes should go to him at once. Reading, signing in a delivery and sharing a snack are ordinary lobby activity.

Question 14 (easy)

During a patrol of the hospital parking garage, Officer Rosa Delgado notices four things. Which one is a safety problem that she should report?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. A fire stairwell door is meant to close so that smoke and fire do not spread, and a wedge keeps this one open. A parked car with closed windows, a card-only pay station and a closing-time sign are all normal.

Question 15 (medium)

Officer Nowak is posted near the locked door to the children's unit at Eastbrook Hospital. Visitors must have a pass, and staff open the door with their ID badges.

Which of the following should concern him most?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The man in C has no pass and got through a locked door by following a staff member, which is how people get into areas they are not allowed in. The other three visitors have passes and are doing ordinary things.

Question 16 (medium)

At 7:00 AM, the key log for the Hospital Police key cabinet showed 15 keys in the cabinet. Since then, the log shows 4 keys signed out and 2 keys signed back in. Officer Whitfield now counts 12 keys in the cabinet.

Which statement best describes the problem?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. The log accounts for 15 minus 4 plus 2, or 13 keys, but only 12 are there, so one key is out with no log entry. B ignores that difference. C counts the 3 missing since the start of the tour but forgets that 2 came back. If 2 signed-in keys had never been put back, the cabinet would hold 11.

Question 17 (hard)

Officer Doyle is watching the outpatient pharmacy line. The computer system has been down for 20 minutes, and the line of 14 people has not moved. A man at the front has asked the clerk three times when it will be fixed, louder each time. Two other people in line have started agreeing with him out loud. The clerk has stopped answering and is looking down at her desk.

Which statement best describes what is likely to go wrong?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The warning signs are the man's rising voice, two others joining him and a clerk who has stopped answering. Together they point to a line that may become disorderly. The outage causes the delay, but fixing computers is not the officer's job, and nothing in the facts points to people leaving or to a need to move the clerk.

Question 18 (hard)

At 2:00 PM, a man in the Marlow Street Center lobby tells Officer Paredes that he has a 2:00 PM appointment on the 3rd floor, and the officer shows him the elevators. At 2:30 PM, the man is still in the lobby. He has walked past the staff-only stairwell door four times, slowing down each time to watch employees swipe their cards. When an employee comes out, he steps toward the door before it closes.

What is the most likely problem?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. Watching people swipe their cards and stepping toward the door as it opens point to an attempt to get into the staff-only area. He was shown the elevators, which rules out A. He told the officer he came for an appointment, not to meet a friend, and nothing he did suggests that he is upset.

Written Comprehension

Understand written sentences and paragraphs, such as a memo, a policy or a report.

Question 19 (easy)

Read this memo, then answer the question.

Eastbrook Hospital visiting hours: General visiting hours are 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and each patient may have two visitors at a time. In the intensive care unit, only one visitor at a time is allowed. Intensive care visitors get a pass at the lobby desk and then check in at the unit desk. Children under 12 may not visit the intensive care unit. Clergy with a hospital-issued ID may visit at any hour.

According to the memo, which statement is correct?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. The memo says clergy with a hospital-issued ID may visit at any hour, which includes 10:00 PM. The intensive care unit allows one visitor at a time, and children under 12 may not visit it, even with a parent. Its visitors check in at the unit desk as well as the lobby desk.

Question 20 (easy)

Read this memo, then answer the question.

Lost ID badges: A staff member who loses an ID badge must report it to the Hospital Police desk within 24 hours. The desk officer turns off the lost badge in the access control system and gives a paper pass good for one day. Replacement badges come from Human Resources in Room 112, on weekdays only. A staff member who loses a badge for the third time in one year is referred to his or her supervisor.

A nurse reports at 9:00 AM on a Saturday that she lost her badge, the first she has lost this year.

According to the memo, what happens next?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. The desk officer turns off the lost badge and gives a one-day paper pass. Room 112 is open on weekdays only, so she cannot get a replacement on a Saturday. A supervisor referral is for a third lost badge in a year, and the memo does not mention 48 hours.

Question 21 (medium)

Read this directive, then answer the question.

Body worn cameras at Marlow Street Center: An officer wearing a body worn camera starts recording before arriving at any call about a disorderly person, any arrest and any use of force. Officers do not record in restrooms or locker rooms unless a crime is in progress there. Once started, a recording is not stopped until the event ends, unless a supervisor orders it stopped; the officer then states the reason aloud before stopping. Officers note every recording made during the tour in their memo books.

Which action follows the directive?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. The directive allows a stop when a supervisor orders it, and the officer must state the reason aloud first, which is what B describes. Recording must start before the officer arrives, not after, and it must not stop just because someone calms down. A routine locker room inspection is not a crime in progress, so it is not recorded.

Question 22 (medium)

Read this memo, then answer the question.

Contract security guards: Contract guards work at the parking garage and the loading dock. They may check IDs and give directions, but they may not search bags, issue summonses or make arrests. A guard who sees a crime calls the Hospital Police desk and keeps watching from a safe distance until a Special Officer arrives. The Special Officer on garage patrol visits each guard post twice per tour and signs the guard's post log.

A guard at the loading dock sees a man who is not with the delivery crew grab a box from an open delivery truck while the driver is inside and hurry toward the street.

According to the memo, what should the guard do?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. Taking a box from a truck is a possible crime, and the memo tells a guard who sees a crime to call the Hospital Police desk and keep watching from a safe distance. Guards may not search bags or issue summonses. Waiting for the next post visit is not what the memo says to do when a guard sees a crime.

Question 23 (hard)

Read this report, then answer the question.

At 11:40 PM, Officer Kevin Doyle was on patrol in the emergency department waiting area when patient Henry Walsh told him that his phone was missing. Mr. Walsh said he last used it at the triage desk at about 10:55 PM. Officer Doyle checked the triage desk and the nearby chairs but did not find it. At 11:52 PM, nurse Ana Ruiz brought Officer Doyle a phone she had found in the restroom. Mr. Walsh identified it by the photo on its lock screen. Officer Doyle returned it to him at 11:55 PM and entered the matter in the command log.

Which statement is supported by the report?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. Nurse Ana Ruiz found the phone in the restroom and brought it to Officer Doyle. Mr. Walsh said he last used it at the triage desk, where Officer Doyle searched without finding it. 11:52 PM is when the nurse brought the phone in, and it was returned at 11:55 PM.

Question 24 (hard)

Read this policy, then answer the question.

Smoking on hospital grounds: No smoking or vaping is allowed anywhere on hospital grounds, including the parking garage and inside parked cars. An officer who sees a person smoking asks the person to stop and gives a card that lists places off hospital grounds. A person who refuses after being asked twice is asked to leave the grounds. If the person who refuses is a patient, the officer does not ask the patient to leave, but tells the patient's nurse instead. Officers do not issue summonses for smoking.

Officer Rahman sees a man in a hospital gown and patient wristband smoking in the garage. She asks him twice to stop, and he refuses both times.

According to the policy, what should she do?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. He is a patient who refused twice, so the policy says not to ask him to leave but to tell his nurse. Asking a person to leave is the rule for people who are not patients. Officers do not issue summonses for smoking, and the policy does not allow smoking anywhere on the grounds.

Written Expression

Use English words and sentences so that others understand what you wrote, such as an incident report or a log entry.

Question 25 (easy)

Officer Nowak's facts: At 9:20 AM, he found the 3rd-floor stairwell door propped open with a chair. He removed the chair, closed the door and told Sergeant Mei Chen.

Which memo book entry is the clearest and most accurate?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. B gives every fact in clear, complete sentences. A runs three sentences together with commas. C says a staff member propped the door, which he did not see. D starts with a phrase that reads as if the officer was propped open with a chair.

Question 26 (easy)

Which sentence for an incident report has no errors in spelling or grammar?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. D has no errors. A is missing the apostrophe in "visitor's." B uses "too" where "to" is needed. C uses "expire" where "expired" is needed.

Question 27 (medium)

Officer Delgado's facts: At 1:15 PM, in the main lobby, visitor Gloria Banks reported that her black leather wallet was missing. She last had it in the cafeteria. Officer Delgado searched the cafeteria and did not find it.

Which memo book entry is the most complete and accurate?

Show answer

Correct answer: C. C has the time, the place, the visitor's name, what was lost, where she last had it and what the officer did. A leaves out the time, and D leaves out the visitor's name. B says the wallet was stolen, but she reported it missing, and nobody saw it taken.

Question 28 (medium)

Facts: Officer Doyle left his radio in the parking garage. Officer Paredes saw it there and told Officer Doyle about it.

Which sentence states this most clearly?

Show answer

Correct answer: A. A names Doyle as the officer who left the radio, so nobody can misread it. In B and D, "he," "his" and "him" could mean either officer. C says "it" without saying what was left.

Question 29 (hard)

Officer Whitfield's facts: At 3:40 PM, a man was shouting at the clinic reception desk. She told him to lower his voice. He kept shouting, so she told him to leave the building. He left at 3:45 PM.

Which entry gives the facts clearly and in the right order?

Show answer

Correct answer: D. D keeps the events in order in correct sentences. A puts the order to leave before the warning. B joins sentences with commas. In C, the opening phrase says that the man told himself to lower his voice.

Question 30 (hard)

Officer Rahman took a statement from visitor Marcus Hill. Mr. Hill said that at about 6:10 PM, he saw a man in a gray jacket take a purse from a chair in the emergency waiting room and run out the side door. Officer Rahman did not see this herself.

Which report sentence is the most accurate?

Show answer

Correct answer: B. B reports what Mr. Hill said, credits it to him and keeps every detail. A states the theft as a fact the officer saw, but she did not see it. C leaves out where it happened, and D says "front door" when Mr. Hill said the side door.
