The stakes

Your score sets your list number

On the last exam, everyone who passed was ranked by score, and DSNY calls candidates in list order for the physical test and hiring. Here is how it worked in 2022:

1

DCAS posts a notice

Filing opens on OASys for a few weeks only. The next notice has not been announced.

2

You take the test

In 2022, a multiple-choice test on a computer at a DCAS testing center, with no calculator.

3

Your score sets your list number

Pass with 70% or more and you join the eligible list in score order.

4

Calls go in list order

As DSNY is authorized to hire, candidates are called for the physical test, CDL check, medical exam and background check.

A higher score means an earlier call. That's why you start before filing opens.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is the next NYC sanitation exam?

It has not been announced. As of October 15, 2026, the Sanitation Worker exam is not on the DCAS annual schedule through June 30, 2027, or on the October 2026 monthly schedule. The last exam was No. 2060, with filing from June 8 to June 30, 2022. Sign up on our guide page, and we will email you when a new notice posts.

Is the DSNY exam the same as the NYC Sanitation Worker exam?

Yes, for the entry-level job. The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) gives the Sanitation Worker exam, and the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) hires from the list it produces. Other sanitation titles, such as Supervisor (Sanitation), have separate exams.

How often is the NYC sanitation exam given?

There is no fixed schedule. Official records show exams in 1998, 2003, 2007, 2014 to 2015 and 2022, plus a 2020 exam that was canceled. That is a gap of four to eight years. We do not predict the next date.

What was on the last exam?

The 2022 notice lists seven abilities: Written Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Written Expression, Information Ordering, Deductive Reasoning, Spatial Orientation and Inductive Reasoning. The test was given at a computer, you needed 70% to pass and calculators were not allowed. The notice gave no question count or time limit.

Do I need a CDL to take the exam?

No. Under the 2022 notice, you need a New York State CDL, Class A or B with an N tank vehicle endorsement and no K or air brake restriction, by the date of appointment. DSNY offers a one-week CDL course to people who have already taken the exam.

How old do I have to be?

Under the 2022 notice, at least 17 1/2 by the end of the filing period to take the test and at least 21 to be appointed.

Can I take the NYC sanitation supervisor exam?

Only if you are already a permanent Sanitation Worker. Supervisor (Sanitation) is a promotion exam; the last one, No. 4551, had filing in October 2023.

What do I get for free?
