These 30 practice questions show the kind of questions and explanations you get with PrepRaven. They cover 2 sections from the official 2026 CBP Officer Entrance Exam Preparation Guide for the CBP Officer Entrance Exam, 15 for each section, from easy to hard. Every question is original. None of them is a real exam question.
Use this free CBP Officer Entrance Exam practice test as a study guide for the two parts of the exam you can prepare for. The Logical Reasoning questions give a short paragraph about government work and ask which conclusion can be validly drawn from it, or which one cannot, with five answer choices (A to E). The Writing Skills questions ask you to fix a sentence, pick the one correct sentence for a formal report or put paragraphs in the right order, with four answer choices, as in the 2026 guide's samples. Every name, place, rule and fact in these questions is made up for practice, so the answer always comes from what the question states, never from outside knowledge. The third part of the exam, the Experience Record, needs no preparation according to the guide, so it is not practiced here.
Announcement CBPO DH 27-1 is open on USAJOBS from October 1 to 31, 2026, and applicants selected at the GS-5 or GS-7 grade must complete and pass the entrance exam.
Logical Reasoning
Read a paragraph about CBP or government work and pick the conclusion that follows from it, or the one that does not. Five choices per question, adaptive, with no skipping and no going back.
Question 1 (easy)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
All of the interpreters assigned to the Brisendale passenger terminal have passed a written language test. The interpreters at the terminal work eight-hour shifts, and some of them also teach evening classes.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Everyone who has passed the written language test is assigned to the terminal
- B. Some people who have passed the written language test are interpreters at the terminal
- C. Some interpreters at the terminal have not passed the written language test
- D. Every interpreter who teaches evening classes works at the terminal
- E. Interpreters who work at other terminals have not taken the written language test
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Every interpreter at the terminal has passed the test, so some people who passed the test are interpreters there; an "all" group is treated as having members. The claim that everyone who passed is assigned to the terminal reverses the "all" statement. The claim that some interpreters have not passed contradicts the first sentence. Some interpreters teach evening classes, but that does not make every evening teacher a terminal interpreter, and the paragraph says nothing about interpreters at other terminals.
Question 2 (easy)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
None of the boats docked at the Saltrebb marina on Tuesday was a fishing boat. Harbor staff inspected several of the boats docked at the marina that day.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Some fishing boats were inspected by harbor staff on Tuesday
- B. Every boat docked at the marina on Tuesday was inspected by harbor staff
- C. Fishing boats are not allowed to dock at the Saltrebb marina
- D. No fishing boat was docked at the Saltrebb marina on Tuesday
- E. Every boat that harbor staff inspected on Tuesday was docked at the marina
Show answer
Correct answer: D. A "none" statement works both ways: if no boat docked there on Tuesday was a fishing boat, then no fishing boat was docked there that day. The paragraph says that several docked boats were inspected, not every one, and it does not say whether staff inspected boats anywhere else, so neither claim with "every" follows. Nothing says any fishing boat was inspected, and a fact about one day is not a rule that bans fishing boats.
Question 3 (easy)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
If a shipment of fresh fruit arrives at the Corrigal cargo dock after 4:00 PM, the shipment is held in the cold room overnight. A shipment of pears reached the dock on Monday.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. If a fresh fruit shipment at the dock is not held in the cold room overnight, it did not arrive after 4:00 PM
- B. If a shipment at the dock is held in the cold room overnight, it is fresh fruit that arrived after 4:00 PM
- C. If a fresh fruit shipment arrives at the dock before 4:00 PM, it is not held in the cold room overnight
- D. The pears that reached the dock on Monday were held in the cold room overnight
- E. Only shipments of fresh fruit are held in the cold room at the dock
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The valid conclusion is the contrapositive: if the result (being held overnight) did not happen, the condition (fresh fruit arriving after 4:00 PM) did not happen either. Saying that every shipment held overnight is late fresh fruit is the converse, and saying that early fruit is not held is the inverse; neither follows, because other shipments may be held for other reasons. The paragraph does not say when the pears arrived, and it never says the cold room holds only fruit.
Question 4 (easy)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
Some of the radios issued to officers at the Pellharbor station were repaired last month. All of the radios repaired last month were returned to the station with new batteries.
From the information given above, which of the following CANNOT be validly concluded?
- A. Some radios issued to officers at the station were returned with new batteries
- B. Some radios repaired last month were radios issued to officers at the station
- C. Every radio repaired last month was returned to the station with new batteries
- D. No radio repaired last month was returned to the station without new batteries
- E. Some radios issued to officers at the station were not repaired last month
Show answer
Correct answer: E. "Some" means at least some and says nothing about the rest, so the paragraph does not show that any issued radio went unrepaired; that is the conclusion that cannot be drawn. The other four follow. The issued radios that were repaired came back with new batteries, and a "some" statement can be turned around. The second sentence says every repaired radio came back with new batteries, and "no radio ... without new batteries" is a double negative that says the same thing.
Question 5 (easy)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
Visitors to the Ebbington county records room sign the logbook unless they hold a staff badge. Theo Dorsainvil visited the records room on Thursday and did not sign the logbook.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Theo Dorsainvil does not hold a staff badge
- B. No visitor to the records room signed the logbook on Thursday
- C. Theo Dorsainvil holds a staff badge
- D. Theo Dorsainvil works in the records room
- E. Every visitor to the records room on Thursday held a staff badge
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The "unless" rule means that a visitor without a staff badge signs the logbook. Theo Dorsainvil did not sign, and therefore he must hold a staff badge; the claim that he does not hold one contradicts the paragraph. A staff badge does not show where he works, and one visitor's facts say nothing about every visitor that day.
Question 6 (medium)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
At the Norvick port, a detection dog goes out on an inspection only with an officer who has completed the canine handling course. Officer Coretta Ruvalcaba took a detection dog on an inspection on Friday. Some officers who have completed the course work the night shift.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Officer Ruvalcaba has completed the canine handling course
- B. Every officer who has completed the canine handling course takes a detection dog on inspections
- C. Officer Ruvalcaba works the night shift
- D. Some officers who work the night shift have not completed the canine handling course
- E. Officers who have not completed the course do not go out on inspections
Show answer
Correct answer: A. "Only with an officer who has completed the course" makes the course a requirement for every inspection with a dog, so Officer Ruvalcaba, who took a dog out, has completed it. A requirement is not a promise: it does not say that everyone who completed the course takes a dog out. Some course graduates work nights, but that tells us nothing about Officer Ruvalcaba's shift or about night-shift officers without the course. The rule limits inspections with a dog, not all inspections, so officers without the course may still go out on other inspections.
Question 7 (medium)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
Every forklift at the Marrowick freight warehouse is inspected each month by a licensed mechanic. All of the licensed mechanics who inspect these forklifts are employees of the county. None of the county's employees works on weekends.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Every employee of the county is a licensed mechanic
- B. Some forklift inspections at the warehouse take place on weekends
- C. Some licensed mechanics employed by the county do not inspect the forklifts
- D. The Marrowick freight warehouse is closed on weekends
- E. No licensed mechanic who inspects these forklifts works on weekends
Show answer
Correct answer: E. The mechanics who inspect the forklifts are all county employees, and no county employee works on weekends, so none of these licensed mechanics works on weekends. The claim that every county employee is a licensed mechanic reverses the "all" statement. Weekend inspections would need a mechanic working on a weekend, which the paragraph rules out. The paragraph says nothing about county mechanics who do not inspect the forklifts or about the warehouse's hours.
Question 8 (medium)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
If a food truck at the Lindvale county fair sells hot meals, its operator holds a health permit. Every operator at the fair who holds a health permit has passed a kitchen inspection this year.
From the information given above, which of the following CANNOT be validly concluded?
- A. If a food truck operator at the fair has not passed a kitchen inspection this year, the truck does not sell hot meals
- B. If a food truck operator at the fair holds a health permit, the truck sells hot meals
- C. Every food truck at the fair that sells hot meals has an operator who passed a kitchen inspection this year
- D. If an operator at the fair does not hold a health permit, that operator's truck does not sell hot meals
- E. No food truck at the fair that sells hot meals has an operator without a health permit
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The paragraph says that selling hot meals requires a permit, not that every permit holder sells hot meals; that is the converse, and it cannot be concluded. The other four follow. Hot meals lead to a permit and a permit leads to a passed inspection, which gives both the chain and its contrapositive (no passed inspection, no hot meals). The contrapositive of the first sentence (no permit, no hot meals) and the double negative "no truck ... has an operator without a permit" also restate the rule.
Question 9 (medium)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
Most of the trainees in the spring class at the Kestrelton training center passed the firearms safety test on their first try. Every trainee who passed on the first try received a certificate within a week.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Every trainee who received a certificate within a week passed the test on the first try
- B. All of the trainees in the spring class received a certificate within a week
- C. No trainee who failed the test on the first try ever received a certificate
- D. Some trainees in the spring class received a certificate within a week
- E. Trainees who failed the test on their first try passed it on their second try
Show answer
Correct answer: D. "Most" gives at least "some": at least some spring trainees passed on the first try, and they received a certificate within a week. The claim that every certificate holder passed on the first try reverses the "all" statement in the second sentence. "Most" is not "all", so the paragraph does not show that every spring trainee got a certificate, and it says nothing about what happened later to trainees who failed.
Question 10 (medium)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
Except for staff on the night shift, every employee of the Quarrybend water department attends the monthly safety meeting. The department has day, evening and night shifts. Grant Ottersen is an employee of the water department, and he does not work the night shift.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. Grant Ottersen works the day shift
- B. Every person who attends the monthly safety meeting is an employee of the water department
- C. Grant Ottersen attends the monthly safety meeting
- D. Grant Ottersen leads the monthly safety meeting
- E. Some employees of the water department who do not work the night shift miss the monthly safety meeting
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The rule covers every employee outside the exception, and Grant Ottersen is an employee who is not on the night shift, so he attends the meeting. Not working nights does not mean he works days, since the department also has an evening shift. The paragraph does not say who leads the meeting or that only department employees attend. The claim that some employees off the night shift miss the meeting contradicts the rule.
Question 11 (hard)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
At the Graystoke county supply depot, no package marked nonperishable is stored in the refrigerated room. Every package that holds medical samples is stored in the refrigerated room. Some of the packages that arrived by air on Monday hold medical samples.
From the information given above, which of the following CANNOT be validly concluded?
- A. No package that arrived by air on Monday is marked nonperishable
- B. No package that holds medical samples is marked nonperishable
- C. Some packages that arrived by air on Monday are stored in the refrigerated room
- D. Some packages that arrived by air on Monday are not marked nonperishable
- E. No package marked nonperishable holds medical samples
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Only some of Monday's air packages hold medical samples, and the paragraph says nothing about the others, so it cannot be concluded that none of them is marked nonperishable; that claim turns "some" into "all". The other four follow. Medical-sample packages go in the refrigerated room and nonperishable packages never do, which means no medical-sample package is marked nonperishable, and a "none" statement works both ways. Monday's packages with medical samples are in the refrigerated room, and therefore they are not marked nonperishable.
Question 12 (hard)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
On any given day, each inspection team at the Tillbury rail yard checks either the freight cars on the east tracks or the freight cars on the west tracks, but not both. If a team checks the west tracks, it files its report with the night supervisor. On Tuesday, Team 4, one of the yard's inspection teams, did not file its report with the night supervisor.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. On Tuesday, Team 4 checked the freight cars on both sets of tracks
- B. Every team that files its report with the night supervisor has checked the west tracks
- C. If a team checks the east tracks, it does not file its report with the night supervisor
- D. On Tuesday, no team checked the freight cars on the west tracks
- E. On Tuesday, Team 4 checked the freight cars on the east tracks
Show answer
Correct answer: E. Team 4 did not file with the night supervisor, so by the contrapositive of the if-then statement it did not check the west tracks; since every team checks one side or the other each day, Team 4 checked the east tracks. Checking both sides is ruled out by the first sentence. The claim that every team filing with the night supervisor checked the west tracks is the converse, and the claim that east-track teams never file with that supervisor is the inverse. One team's facts say nothing about every other team on Tuesday.
Question 13 (hard)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
At the Pyleford licensing office, a boat operator's permit is renewed only after the operator passes a written safety quiz. The safety quiz is given only at the office, on the first Tuesday of each month. Iris Pazmino renewed her boat operator's permit at the office in May.
From the information given above, which of the following CANNOT be validly concluded?
- A. Iris Pazmino passed the written safety quiz
- B. Iris Pazmino took the written safety quiz on a Tuesday
- C. Iris Pazmino passed the written safety quiz on the first Tuesday of May
- D. No operator renews a boat operator's permit at the office without first passing the safety quiz
- E. An operator who has not passed the safety quiz does not have a permit renewed at the office
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The paragraph shows that Iris Pazmino passed the quiz before her renewal in May and that the quiz is given only on first Tuesdays, but it does not say in which month she took it; she may have passed in April or earlier, so the claim about the first Tuesday of May cannot be concluded. The other four follow. A renewal requires a pass, and the quiz is given only on Tuesdays. The two statements about operators who have not passed restate the "only after" rule, one of them as a double negative.
Question 14 (hard)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
Many of the bridges in Kellsworth County that the county road crew inspected last year were not repainted. Every bridge in the county that was not repainted was given an unfavorable rating. No bridge with an unfavorable rating was opened to trucks over 20 tons.
From the information given above, which of the following CANNOT be validly concluded?
- A. Some bridges the crew inspected last year were given an unfavorable rating
- B. Some bridges the crew inspected last year were repainted
- C. Some bridges the crew inspected last year were not opened to trucks over 20 tons
- D. No bridge in the county that was opened to trucks over 20 tons was given an unfavorable rating
- E. Every bridge in the county that was opened to trucks over 20 tons was repainted
Show answer
Correct answer: B. A statement that many bridges were not repainted does not tell you whether any bridge was repainted; it implies nothing about the rest, so that conclusion cannot be drawn. The other four follow. The many bridges that were not repainted got unfavorable ratings, and therefore they were not opened to heavy trucks. A "none" statement works both ways, and a bridge opened to heavy trucks cannot have an unfavorable rating, which means it must have been repainted.
Question 15 (hard)
Read the paragraph, then answer the question.
At the Sutterby seaport, a cargo container is released to a trucking company only if its seal number has been recorded. Seal numbers are recorded only by inspectors who have finished the seal training course. None of the inspectors hired in September has finished the seal training course.
From the information given above, which of the following can be validly concluded?
- A. No container is released to a trucking company while inspectors hired in September are on duty
- B. Every inspector who has finished the seal training course records seal numbers
- C. Every container whose seal number has been recorded is released to a trucking company
- D. No inspector hired in September has recorded a seal number at the seaport
- E. Inspectors hired in September will finish the seal training course by the end of the year
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Recording a seal number requires the seal training course, and no September hire has finished it, so no September hire has recorded a seal number. Other inspectors can still record numbers, and containers can therefore be released while September hires are on duty. The "only" statements set requirements, not promises: they do not say that every trained inspector records numbers or that every recorded container is released. The paragraph says nothing about when the September hires will finish the course.

Question 16 (easy)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
The list of approved vendors for the Fendrick port cafeteria are posted on the bulletin board next to the main office door.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "vendors" to "vendor's"
- B. Change "are" to "is"
- C. Insert a comma after "cafeteria"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The subject is "list," which is singular, so the verb must be "is"; the words "of approved vendors" between them do not change the subject. "Vendors" is a plain plural here, not a possessive, and a comma after "cafeteria" would split the subject from its verb. Because the verb does not agree with its subject, a correction is necessary.
Question 17 (easy)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
The new staffing plan is expected to have a positive affect on wait times at the Thistlebrook inspection lanes during the summer.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "is expected" to "are expected"
- B. Change "positive" to "positively"
- C. Change "affect" to "effect"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: C. "Effect" is the noun that means a result; "affect" is usually a verb that means to influence. After "a positive," the sentence needs the noun, so "affect" must change to "effect." The subject "plan" is singular, so "is expected" is right, and "positive" is an adjective that correctly describes the noun.
Question 18 (easy)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
On Tuesday, lieutenant Genevieve Kovacevic reviewed the overtime requests from the Morrisdale bridge crossing and approved most of them.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "lieutenant" to "Lieutenant"
- B. Delete the comma after "On Tuesday"
- C. Change "reviewed" to "had reviewed"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A title that comes right before a person's name is capitalized, as in "Lieutenant Genevieve Kovacevic"; the same word after a name, as in "Genevieve Kovacevic, the lieutenant," stays lowercase. A comma sets off an introductory phrase such as "On Tuesday," so that comma stays. Nothing in the sentence calls for the past perfect "had reviewed," because no other past event comes after the review.
Question 19 (hard)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
Both inspectors' reports on the damaged crane at the Westerbrook dock were filed on time, and each report included photographs of the crane.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "inspectors'" to "inspector's"
- B. Change "were filed" to "was filed"
- C. Delete the comma after "time"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The sentence is correct as written. Two inspectors wrote reports, so the plural possessive "inspectors'" (apostrophe after the s) is right; "inspector's" would mean one inspector. The subject "reports" is plural and takes "were filed," and the comma before "and" is needed because "and" joins two independent clauses.
Question 20 (easy)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
Officers at the Wrennick crossing must carry a flashlight, a notebook and a spare radio battery at the start of every shift.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "Officers" to "Officer's"
- B. Insert a comma after "notebook"
- C. Change "at the start of" to "in the start of"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The writing rules in the official guide call for a comma after every item in a series, including the item before "and." A comma therefore belongs after "notebook." "Officers" is a plain plural subject, not a possessive, and "at the start of" is the standard phrase. The sentence is missing the series comma, so a correction is necessary.
Question 21 (medium)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
The inspectors which completed the new radio course last month will begin working at the Ferrisdale truck gate next June.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "which" to "who"
- B. Insert a comma after "inspectors"
- C. Change "will begin" to "began"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Use "who" for people and "which" for things, so "inspectors which" should read "inspectors who." The clause "who completed the new radio course last month" tells which inspectors are meant, so it is restrictive and takes no comma. The move to the gate happens next June, so the future "will begin" is correct and "began" would not fit.
Question 22 (hard)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
The review committee at the Gallowfield port is studying the new badge design this week, and its report to the port director will be ready by Friday.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Change "is" to "are"
- B. Change "its" to "it's"
- C. Change "director" to "Director"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: D. The sentence is correct as written. "Committee" is a collective noun that acts as one group here, so it takes the singular "is," and the possessive pronoun "its" has no apostrophe ("it's" means "it is"). A title is capitalized only when it comes right before a name, so "the port director" stays lowercase.
Question 23 (medium)
Read the sentence, then answer the question.
The cargo scanner at the Dunhollow freight dock stopped working shortly after noon and the repair crew did not arrive until 4:00 PM.
Which correction should be made to the sentence?
- A. Insert a comma after "scanner"
- B. Change "stopped" to "stops"
- C. Insert a comma after "noon"
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The sentence uses "and" to join two independent clauses, each with its own subject and verb ("the cargo scanner ... stopped" and "the repair crew did not arrive"), so a comma goes before "and," right after "noon." A comma after "scanner" would separate the subject from its verb. Changing "stopped" to "stops" would shift the first clause into the present while the second stays in the past.
Question 24 (medium)
Read the situation, then answer the question.
An inspector at the Stonebarrow warehouse is writing a report about a shipment count.
Which sentence is correct in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling and suitable for a formal report?
- A. While checking the cargo list, the inspector noticed that one crate was missing.
- B. While checking the cargo list, one crate was noticed to be missing by the inspector.
- C. While checking the cargo list, the inspector notices that one crate had been missing.
- D. While checking the cargo list the inspector, noticed that one crate was missing.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. An opening phrase such as "While checking the cargo list" must be followed by the person doing the checking. The sentence that puts "one crate" right after the phrase has a dangling participle and also shifts into the passive voice. The sentence with "notices" mixes the present tense with the past perfect "had been," and the sentence with the comma after "inspector" puts a comma between the subject and its verb and drops the comma after the opening phrase. Only the sentence in which "the inspector noticed" is correct.
Question 25 (hard)
Read the situation, then answer the question.
A supervisor at the Yarrowgate port is writing a memo about equipment. The port received only one new scanner this year.
Which sentence is correct in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling and suitable for a formal report?
- A. The new scanner which arrived on Monday, is faster than the two older ones.
- B. The new scanner, which arrived on Monday, are faster than the two older ones.
- C. The new scanner, which arrived on Monday, is faster than the two older ones.
- D. The new scanner, which arrived on Monday is faster than the two older ones.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The port has only one new scanner, so the clause "which arrived on Monday" adds extra information and does not identify which scanner is meant. It is nonrestrictive and must be set off by a pair of commas, one before it and one after it. The sentences with only one of those commas are wrong, because the single comma splits the subject from its verb. The sentence with "are" breaks subject-verb agreement: the subject is the singular "scanner," and the clause between them does not change that.
Question 26 (easy)
Read the situation, then answer the question.
An officer at the Oakvane ferry terminal is writing a report about a passenger's lost bag.
Which sentence is correct in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling and suitable for a formal report?
- A. The passenger said the bag was seperated from her other luggage, and a second search was neccessary.
- B. The passenger said the bag was separated from her other luggage, and a second search was neccesary.
- C. The passenger said the bag was seperated from her other luggage, and a second search was necessary.
- D. The passenger said the bag was separated from her other luggage, and a second search was necessary.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Only one sentence spells both words correctly: "separated" (with "par" in the middle) and "necessary" (one c and two s's). The other sentences misspell one or both words as "seperated," "neccessary," or "neccesary." Everything else in the four sentences is the same.
Question 27 (hard)
Read the situation, then answer the question.
A training officer at the Ambleford academy is writing a course summary for new hires.
Which sentence is correct in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling and suitable for a formal report?
- A. The course covers how to inspect a vehicle, reading a shipping list, and how to write a report.
- B. The course covers how to inspect a vehicle, how to read a shipping list, and how to write a report.
- C. The course covers how to inspect a vehicle, how to read a shipping list, and how a report should be written.
- D. The course cover how to inspect a vehicle, how to read a shipping list, and how to write a report.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Items joined in a series should have parallel form. The correct sentence uses the same pattern for all three items ("how to inspect," "how to read," and "how to write"), and its verb "covers" agrees with the singular subject "course." One sentence breaks the pattern with "reading," another shifts to the passive "how a report should be written," and the last uses the plural verb "cover" with a singular subject.
Question 28 (medium)
The numbered paragraphs below are from a memo about new parking rules at the Pinmoor port. If the order shown is already the best one, choose "No correction is necessary."
(1) A shuttle van will run between Lot C and the main building every 15 minutes, from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
(2) Starting on March 1, the port will use a new parking plan for its staff lots, so that trucks waiting for inspection have more room near the gates.
(3) Questions about the new plan should go to the facilities office. Staff members who need a parking permit for Lot C can pick one up there before the end of February.
(4) Under the plan, all staff vehicles must park in Lot C, which is next to the north fence. Lot A and Lot B will be used only by trucks waiting in line.
Which order of the paragraphs makes the passage well-organized, clear, and coherent?
- A. 2, 4, 1, 3
- B. 4, 2, 1, 3
- C. 1, 2, 4, 3
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Paragraph 2 introduces the new parking plan, so it comes first. Paragraph 4 begins with the words "Under the plan" and must therefore follow the paragraph that introduces the plan, and paragraph 1, about the shuttle to Lot C, depends on paragraph 4, which first names Lot C. Paragraph 3, which tells readers where to send questions, closes the memo. The order as given and the order that starts with paragraph 1 open with a detail before the plan is introduced, and the order that starts with paragraph 4 opens with "Under the plan" before any plan has been named.
Question 29 (medium)
The numbered paragraphs below are from an officer's report about a fuel leak at the Hadmere port. If the order shown is already the best one, choose "No correction is necessary."
(1) I went to the truck at once and saw fuel pooling under the rear valve. I closed off the area with cones and called the port fire unit.
(2) The driver, who returned at 7:20 AM, said the valve had been damaged the day before. I gave him the incident number and reopened the area at 8:05 AM.
(3) At 6:40 AM on May 12, a dockworker told me that diesel fuel was leaking from a parked tanker truck near Pier 2.
(4) The fire unit arrived at 6:55 AM, stopped the leak, and spread absorbent material over the fuel.
Which order of the paragraphs makes the passage well-organized, clear, and coherent?
- A. 1, 3, 4, 2
- B. 3, 1, 4, 2
- C. 3, 4, 1, 2
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: B. A report of events should follow the order in which they happened. Paragraph 3, the first word of the leak at 6:40 AM, comes first; paragraph 1 tells how the writer went to the truck and called the fire unit; paragraph 4 tells what the fire unit did when it arrived at 6:55 AM; and paragraph 2, with the driver's return at 7:20 AM and the reopening, comes last. The other orders either open with the writer going to the truck "at once" before anyone has reported the leak or have the fire unit arrive before anyone called it.
Question 30 (hard)
The numbered paragraphs below are from an article in a staff newsletter about the Selbrook records office. If the order shown is already the best one, choose "No correction is necessary."
(1) By June, the wait for a copy was back to eight days. The office's experience shows that a busy records unit can shorten its waiting time by changing how it handles requests, even without adding staff.
(2) In January, the office received 1,200 requests for copies of inspection reports. By March, the number had grown to 2,100, but the office still had the same four clerks.
(3) To shorten the wait, the office began scanning its oldest reports in April and set up an online form for requests.
(4) Because each request was handled by hand, the wait for a copy grew from eight days to almost five weeks.
Which order of the paragraphs makes the passage well-organized, clear, and coherent?
- A. 1, 2, 4, 3
- B. 2, 3, 4, 1
- C. 2, 4, 3, 1
- D. No correction is necessary
Show answer
Correct answer: C. This passage moves from the particular to the general: it reports what happened and ends with the lesson drawn from it. Paragraph 2 sets the scene with the rise in requests, paragraph 4 explains the result ("Because each request was handled by hand"), paragraph 3 describes the fix ("To shorten the wait"), and paragraph 1 gives the outcome and the general statement that closes the passage. The order as given and the order that opens with paragraph 1 put the June outcome before the problem is described, and the order that puts paragraph 3 second describes a fix for a wait the reader has not yet heard about.
What these questions are, and are not
The 2026 preparation guide describes both tests you can study for. The Writing Skills Test runs up to 63 minutes, at about 1.5 minutes a question, and the Logical Reasoning Test runs up to 83 minutes, at about three minutes a question, with five answer choices per question. Both are taken on a computer and are adaptive, with no going back and no skipping. The guide does not publish the number of questions or the pass score. These questions practice the same kinds of reasoning and writing with made-up paragraphs, sentences and memos about government work. They are not copies of the real test, and the real test may look different.
Frequently asked questions
What is on the CBP Officer Logical Reasoning Test?
Each question gives a paragraph drawn from written material about CBP or government work. You accept every fact in it as true and pick the one conclusion that can be validly drawn, or the one that cannot, from five choices. The 2026 guide teaches statements with all, some, none and most, if-then statements and words such as only, unless, except and not. The test allows up to 83 minutes. See how the exam works.
What is on the CBP Officer Writing Skills Test?
The 2026 guide says the Writing Skills Test measures how well you use basic English rules for grammar, syntax, usage and punctuation, and how you organize sentences and paragraphs. Its sample questions ask you to choose a correction for a sentence, choose the one correct sentence for a formal letter or report, or choose the best order for four paragraphs, each with four choices. The test allows up to 63 minutes.
How many questions are on the CBP entrance exam?
CBP does not publish a question count for any part. The 2026 guide gives pacing instead: about 1.5 minutes per question on the Writing Skills Test and about three minutes per question on the Logical Reasoning Test. Both tests are computer adaptive, so the questions you get depend on your answers.
Can I skip a question or go back on the CBP Officer exam?
No. The guide says the Writing Skills and Logical Reasoning tests are computer adaptive: you cannot skip a question or return to one after you submit it, so give your best answer to each question.
Is there an official CBP Officer practice test?
Yes. The 2026 CBP Officer Entrance Exam Preparation Guide has 8 Logical Reasoning practice questions (suggested time 20 minutes) and 8 Writing Skills practice questions (suggested time 15 minutes), with the answers explained. CBP's study guides page also links to lessons and practice tests. The questions on this page are our own and are not copied from the guide or the real test.
Is there math on the CBP Officer Entrance Exam?
No. An older guide from 2022 had an Arithmetic Reasoning section, but the current guide lists only three parts: the Experience Record, the Writing Skills Test and the Logical Reasoning Test.
Do I need to study for the Experience Record?
The guide says the Experience Record measures background experience and needs no preparation. CBP does not publish how it is scored, so we explain it in our guides and do not offer practice for it.
