CBP officer vs Border Patrol agent: both jobs are in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), but CBP officers work at ports of entry and Border Patrol agents secure the border between ports of entry. They have separate job announcements, separate entrance exams that share two parts, separate academies and different pay scales. Many people search for a "Border Patrol officer vs agent" comparison; the official titles are Customs and Border Protection Officer and Border Patrol Agent, and this guide compares the two using only what the official announcements and exam guides say.

Duties: at the ports vs between the ports
CBP officers inspect people and conveyances, determine who is admissible to the United States, enforce customs, immigration and agriculture laws and stop illegal entry and smuggling at ports of entry (Announcement CBPO DH 27-1). CBP has 328 ports of entry (Field Operations). See what is a CBP officer for where they work.
Border Patrol agents secure U.S. borders between ports of entry (CBP). The Border Patrol announcement says agents detect and question people suspected of immigration or customs violations, prevent and apprehend people who enter unlawfully and smugglers, follow tracks and other physical evidence, perform various checks and patrol the border and coastal waterways. Its duty locations are grouped by Border Patrol sector, such as Big Bend, Del Rio, El Paso, Tucson and San Diego.
The entrance exams: what is shared and what is not
Each job has its own entrance exam. CBP's two preparation guides show how they compare:
- Shared: both start with an Experience Record and both have a computer-adaptive Logical Reasoning Test. The two guides use the same Logical Reasoning teaching text, and at least seven of the eight practice paragraphs in the Border Patrol guide match the CBP officer guide.
- Different: the CBP Officer Entrance Exam adds a Writing Skills Test (up to 63 minutes). Times differ too: the CBP officer Experience Record is up to 60 minutes and its Logical Reasoning Test up to 83 minutes; the Border Patrol Experience Record is up to 40 minutes and its Logical Reasoning Test up to 120 minutes.
Neither guide says that one exam's result counts for the other job. The CBP officer exam is covered in full in how the CBP Officer Entrance Exam works.
Fitness test
CBP's Applicant Hiring Process FAQs (December 2023) list different minimums: CBP officer applicants do 20 sit-ups, 12 push-ups and a 5-minute step test at 120 beats per minute; Border Patrol applicants do 25 sit-ups, 20 push-ups and the same step test. The FAQ allows one retest. Check the current rules with your hiring contact, since the FAQ is older than both announcements.
Training: Glynco vs Artesia
New CBP officers attend the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA, for 103 days of instruction in basic law enforcement skills, immigration laws and other subjects. New Border Patrol agents attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, for about 6 months of instruction, which includes Spanish. Both announcements require you to finish the academy to keep the job.
Pay: GS for officers, GL for new agents
The CBP officer announcement lists GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9 with promotion potential to GS-11 and GS-12. The Border Patrol announcement lists the GL pay scale at GL-5 or GL-7, with promotion potential to GL-9, GS-11 and GS-12. OPM's Salary Table 2026-GL is its table of special base rates for law enforcement officers at grades 3 to 10; for example, it lists $42,919 at grade 5 step 1, compared with $34,799 on the regular 2026-GS table. OPM says these rates "must be the basis for computing locality payments."
Extra pay works differently too. The CBP officer announcement says a fully trained officer is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay. The Border Patrol announcement says a fully trained agent may be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. Grades, locality figures and overtime rules for CBP officers are in the CBP officer salary guide.
