Border Patrol agent facts are from USAJOBS Announcement BPA DH 27-1. CBP officer facts are from USAJOBS Announcement CBPO DH 27-1. Both were posted October 1, 2026 and were accepting applications when we checked them on October 20, 2026. Exam facts are from CBP's Border Patrol Agent and CBP Officer entrance exam preparation guides.
Border Patrol agent vs CBP officer: both are front-line jobs in U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), but Border Patrol agents work between the ports of entry and CBP officers work at the ports of entry. They have separate job announcements, separate entrance exams that share two parts, separate academies and different pay rules. People often search for a "Border Patrol officer vs agent" or a "custom border patrol agent" job; the official titles are Border Patrol Agent and Customs and Border Protection Officer, and this guide compares the two using only what the official announcements and exam guides say.

Duties: between the ports vs at the ports
Border Patrol agents detect and question people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, prevent and apprehend people who cross illegally and smugglers, follow tracks and other physical evidence, do farm, building, traffic and transportation checks and city patrols and patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways (BPA DH 27-1). CBP lists 20 Border Patrol sectors, from San Diego to Houlton, Maine (Sectors and Stations). The full job is described in what a Border Patrol agent does.
CBP officers enforce customs, immigration and agriculture laws, conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances, determine who is admissible to the United States and prevent the illegal entry of people, prohibited goods and drugs (CBPO DH 27-1). CBP's Field Operations page says its Office of Field Operations works at 328 ports of entry.
The entrance exams: what is shared and what is not
Each job has its own entrance exam. CBP's two preparation guides show how they compare:
- Shared: both start with an Experience Record, and both have a computer-adaptive Logical Reasoning Test.
- Different: the CBP Officer Entrance Exam adds a Writing Skills Test (up to 63 minutes). The time limits differ too: the Border Patrol Experience Record is up to 40 minutes and its Logical Reasoning Test up to 120 minutes, while the CBP officer Experience Record is up to 60 minutes and its Logical Reasoning Test up to 83 minutes.
Neither guide says that one exam's result counts for the other job. The Border Patrol exam is covered in full in how the Border Patrol Agent Entrance Exam works.
Training: Artesia vs Glynco
New Border Patrol agents attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for about 6 months of instruction in immigration and nationality laws, Border Patrol operations and other courses, with Spanish training. New CBP officers attend FLETC in Glynco, Georgia, for 103 days of instruction in basic law enforcement skills, immigration laws and other subjects, and officers at certain duty locations may have to pass a Spanish training program. Both announcements require you to finish the academy to keep the job.
Pay: how the two postings compare
The two postings give similar top figures, and both say the ending salary includes overtime, if worked. They start at different points and handle overtime differently:
- Starting figure. The Border Patrol posting starts at $51,632, which is GL-5 step 1 on OPM's 2026 special rate table L046 (Rest of U.S.) for law enforcement officers. The CBP officer posting starts at $41,863. OPM's 2026 special rate tables for law enforcement list both job series, 1895 and 1896.
- Overtime. A fully trained Border Patrol agent may get an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014, which sets three overtime levels (25%, 12.5% and none). A fully trained CBP officer is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay.
- Incentives. The Border Patrol posting offers up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives and up to $30,000 in retention incentives over three years. The CBP officer posting offers up to $15,000 a year to officers who choose a prioritized port, with a three-year or four-year service contract.
Grades, locality figures and overtime levels for Border Patrol agents are in the Border Patrol agent salary guide.
Authority: patrols and checkpoints vs port inspections
Border Patrol agents run roving patrols and highway checkpoints away from the border, under rules set by federal law and two Supreme Court decisions; see can Border Patrol pull you over? Inspections of people and goods entering the country at ports of entry are the CBP officer's job and are not covered in that guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Border Patrol agent and a CBP officer?
Border Patrol agents secure the border between ports of entry, on patrol and at highway checkpoints. CBP officers inspect people, vehicles and goods at ports of entry such as airports, seaports and land crossings. Both are CBP jobs with their own announcements, exams and academies.
Border Patrol officer vs agent: is there a Border Patrol officer?
The official titles are Border Patrol Agent and Customs and Border Protection Officer. Neither announcement we checked uses the title Border Patrol officer.
What is a "custom border patrol agent"?
It is not an official title. U.S. Customs and Border Protection hires Border Patrol agents, who work between ports of entry, and CBP officers, who handle customs and immigration inspections at ports of entry. If you mean customs inspections, that is the CBP officer job.
Is the Border Patrol exam the same as the CBP officer exam?
No, but they share two parts. Both have an Experience Record and a computer-adaptive Logical Reasoning Test, and the CBP officer exam adds a Writing Skills Test. The time limits differ: 40 and 120 minutes for Border Patrol, 60, 63 and 83 minutes for CBP officers.
Does a passing score on one exam count for the other?
Neither preparation guide says so, and no official source we checked does. Ask your hiring contact before assuming it.
Which job pays more?
The postings are not directly comparable. The Border Patrol announcement lists $51,632 to $124,717 and the CBP officer announcement $41,863 to $127,464, and both top figures include overtime. Border Patrol overtime is a 25% supplement for fully trained agents; CBP officer overtime is up to $45,000.
Where do Border Patrol agents and CBP officers train?
Border Patrol agents train for about 6 months at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM. CBP officers train for 103 days at FLETC in Glynco, GA.
Do both jobs need Spanish?
Border Patrol agents must be able to speak and read Spanish and English, and Spanish is taught at the academy. CBP officers at certain duty locations may have to pass a Spanish training program.
Do both jobs have an age limit?
Yes. Both announcements say you must be referred for selection before your 40th birthday, with exceptions such as prior federal law enforcement service under the special retirement rules or eligibility for veterans' preference.
