The Postal Exam 477 guards the retail counter: Sales and Services Associate and PSE Sales and Services Distribution Associate jobs. It is the exam for the most customer-facing role USPS has, and fittingly, it is the only one with a register section. Here is what official sources actually publish about it, and what they do not.
The basics
- The Virtual Entry Assessment CS (477) screens applicants for Sales and Services Associate and PSE Sales and Services Distribution Associate positions.
- Taken online and unproctored on any device, generally 30-45 minutes, within 72 hours of the emailed invitation. Free, like every USPS exam.
- For most of these positions there is no interview: USPS ranks applicants by score plus any veterans' preference, and offers go down the list.
The sections
Per the Inspector General's mapping: the unscored Realistic Job Preview video, then Work Scenarios (counter situations, most-and-least picks), Tell Us Your Story (work history), Describe Your Approach (forced-choice pairs), and Work Your Register - unique to the 477 among all four exams, and notably the 477 is mapped WITHOUT the plant exams' Check for Errors section. Our Work Your Register guide covers the trainable skills underneath it.
What the job actually is
USPS's duty list for the retail role: greet and assist customers, handle purchases and returns of products and services, perform passport duties, keep the retail lobby presentable, and prolonged standing while serving. You are the post office's face, voice, and register, all shift long.
Scoring, retakes, and the one-year rule
- 70% passes; eligible/ineligible reporting; a pass is reused for about two years of applications requiring the 477.
- Failing locks you out of the 477 and the whole customer service group for one year - but only that group. The 474, 475, and 476 stay open immediately.
What USPS does not publish
No question counts, no per-section timing, no weighting, no pass rates, and for Work Your Register, nothing beyond the section's name in a federal audit table. Anyone quoting those details invented them. Our practice sizes to the official 30-45 minutes and trains the documented skills.

Quick answers
Is there math on the 477?
The register section involves money arithmetic: totals and change. No algebra, no word problems beyond what a counter transaction naturally contains, and no reading comprehension section.
Does the 477 have Check for Errors?
Not per the Inspector General's table: that section belongs to the 475 and 476. The 477's unique section is Work Your Register.
Do Sales and Services Associates need retail experience?
No official source lists it as a requirement; the assessment asks about whatever work history you have, and USPS explicitly says school, sports, and activities count for applicants without formal employment.
