USPS Postal Exam 476 Study Guide: How It Really Works

The verified facts about the Mail Processing exam: four sections, the 72-hour window, 70% to pass, and what no official source publishes.

The Postal Exam 476 stands between you and Mail Processing Clerk jobs - the people who run the automated machines that sort America's mail. As with its sibling exams, most online advice about it is guesswork wearing a confident face. This guide sticks to what USPS and a 2024 federal audit actually publish.

The basics

  • The Virtual Entry Assessment MP (476) is the online screening exam for Mail Processing Clerk and PSE Mail Processing Clerk positions.
  • Taken online and unproctored on any device, generally in about 30-45 minutes, within 72 hours of the emailed invitation (check spam). Applying and testing are free.
  • For most of these positions there is no interview: your score plus any veterans' preference sets your rank on the hiring list, and offers go top-down.

The four sections

Per the USPS Inspector General's mapping and the official Candidate Guide: a Realistic Job Preview video (required, unscored), then Work Scenarios, Tell Us Your Story, Describe Your Approach, and Check for Errors - the accuracy section the 476 shares with the mail handler exam. Accuracy checking is the one genuinely trainable skill here, and our Check for Errors technique guide covers the method in full; it applies to the 476 identically.

What the job actually is

USPS's own duty list: sort outgoing and incoming mail using automated equipment; keep support equipment and materials organized; provide services at a public window for non-financial transactions; lifting, carrying, and prolonged standing. It is rhythmic, machine-paced plant work, often overnight. The Realistic Job Preview shows it honestly - watch it as information, not as an ad.

Scoring, retakes, and the one-year rule

  • 70% passes; results read eligible or ineligible, and a pass stays valid for about two years across future 476 applications.
  • Failing locks you out of the 476, and the whole mail processing group, for one year. The lockout is per exam version: the 474, 475, and 477 stay open immediately.

What USPS does not publish

Question counts, per-section timing, section weighting, and pass rates are not published anywhere official. Sites quoting them are guessing, and they disagree with each other. Our practice is sized to the official 30-45 minute duration, and our coaching stays inside the documented facts.

Quick answers

Is the 476 the same as the 475?

Close siblings, not the same exam. Same four sections, both plant jobs, but different job groups and independent results. Our 475 vs 476 breakdown covers how to choose.

Is there math or reading comprehension?

No. Judgment scenarios, work history, work-style pairs, and accuracy checking. The academic-style Exam 473 retired in 2019.

Can I take the 475 and 476 both?

Yes, by applying to jobs in both groups. Each has its own result, its own two-year validity, and its own one-year lockout if failed.
