The 474 is as much a logistics exercise as a test. Here is the timeline, built from official sources.
Before you apply
- New postings typically appear on Fridays and remain available through Wednesday - most close within three to five days.
- Each posting invites a pre-set number of applicants to the assessment, first come, first served. Applying early in a posting’s window genuinely matters.
- USPS is rolling out a new application system in which the assessment happens during the application itself with real-time results - so be ready to take it the moment you apply, not days later.
When the invitation lands
- The clock starts when the email is sent - watch your inbox and spam folder from the moment you apply.
- Plan one quiet block of about an hour within the 72 hours. USPS recommends a good internet connection, a distraction-free place, and one sitting if possible (not required).
- Any device works - computer, tablet, or phone. Use whichever is most comfortable and reliable.
- If you need accommodations: a Section 508-compliant version is available from the assessment launch page, and additional requests go to ExamAdmin@usps.gov before your deadline.
- Do a familiarization run first - one realistic practice test, so the format costs you zero surprise on the real attempt. That is the entire point of practicing: USPS itself says no study is needed, and we agree - what practice buys you is calm.
⏱️The smartest time to practice is before you apply, while there is no clock running. Take the free diagnostic now and walk into your 72 hours already warm.
After you finish
- Your Notice of Result (eligible or ineligible) appears in your online testing account.
- Eligible: you are ranked by score plus any veterans’ preference, and your application stays active for offers for 90 days. Offers come by email from USPS’s centralized HR - for most carrier roles there is no interview step at all, which is why the assessment carries so much weight.
- Your passing result remains valid about two years and applies automatically to future applications requiring the 474.
- Ineligible: the one-year retake lockout applies to the 474 and its job group - though you may take a different version (475, 476, 477) for a different job group immediately.
